I have a friend who is having her second boy and I wanted to get the baby something special that will be his own since most everything he will have will be a hand me down from his big brother. Looking for some good suggestions. They don't have a name yet so I want it special but not personalized with a name.
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I love answering questions like this one. I love shopping for just the right gift. Thanks for asking.

A Christmas tree ornament if they observe the holiday. Otherwise, a decoration for some other holiday.

Board books for babies. I love Sandra Boynton books. Chances are the brother's books are a little chewed like my daughter's are.

A special stuffed toy that infants can play with (sewn eyes rather than plastic glued onto the animal). Favorite stuffed animals can't be shared.

Similar shirts for both boys for photos together.

A photo session.

Ask your friend what most needs replacing. She'll know.

Or some special gizmo she had wanted but never bought the first time around. I wish I had bought one of those seats that allow kids to sit up before they are able to do it themselves.

As I recall, the 18 month to 2 year size of clothing got the dirtiest due to food stains, and those could not be worn again. Buy clothing in that size.

Here are the big ticket items that improve so greatly with every year, a new one will still be appreciated: stroller and car seat. Baby bottles have been improved, too, by eliminating the toxic plastic.

He's going to need his own bed someday, so sheets and blankets for his big boy bed.

A stockpile of meals for the freezer so momma can sleep when she has the chance. A rested mom is a special gift for the baby. :)

Put anything you purchase into a storage tub that can be used for the onslaught of stuff coming into the house.

Wait for the name, and purchase a savings bond or some other kind of investment and his own piggy bank. Hand-me-downs during the early years make sense, especially as the child won't know the difference. He'll start getting annoyed with the hand-me-downs when he's five or so. :)

I had a second daughter only a year and a half after the first. As far as gifts went I asked for nothing but my family wanted too. Some of friends as well. My favorite thing was a gift bag of a few really needed things. My friend went and got a small pack of 3 different sized diapers, a cute spoon and dish, a sweet blanket, and a name plate/hand and foot kit. I LOVED this more than the clothes and the gift baskets. As long as its from the heart and given with love most people LOVE the gifts.

I like to give baby blankets...every kid needs their own! Piggy bank is a good one too. Just a reminder, I don't know how old her first is but don't forget a little something for him too. It helps the transition and will mean a lot.

A big box of diapers in a size 2 or 3 size and a big box of wipes. Not one package - the large box they sell at Costco's.
Also, If you are into cooking, you could make 1 or 2 meals for the family that they can freeze.
For something special, a cute outfit in a 6 - 9 month size and a baby book.

Having a 5 month old, 4 yo and 5 yo I can relate.

Good for you for being sweet. Any little gift you give is sweet and thougtful.

There are some really neat kids rocking chairs at www.hoohobbers.com. You can have them personalized or not. My kids were given these as gifts and used them until they were about 9 years old. AThey won't be able to use them right away, but it would be something for them to look forward to using closer to 18 mos. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with books!
