As I recall, the 18 month to 2 year size of clothing got the dirtiest due to food stains, and those could not be worn again. Buy clothing in that size.
Here are the big ticket items that improve so greatly with every year, a new one will still be appreciated: stroller and car seat. Baby bottles have been improved, too, by eliminating the toxic plastic.
He's going to need his own bed someday, so sheets and blankets for his big boy bed.
A stockpile of meals for the freezer so momma can sleep when she has the chance. A rested mom is a special gift for the baby. :)
Put anything you purchase into a storage tub that can be used for the onslaught of stuff coming into the house.
Wait for the name, and purchase a savings bond or some other kind of investment and his own piggy bank. Hand-me-downs during the early years make sense, especially as the child won't know the difference. He'll start getting annoyed with the hand-me-downs when he's five or so. :)
