Sons & Diapers

Hello all! I have an almost five month old baby boy (15.5 lbs at his last appt) and am just now switching to Size 3 diapers. He can still fit into Size 2's, however, the past two nights he's peed through his diaper/outfit so I'm assuming it's because he's sleeping/in bed for 10+ hours per night and the diapers are too small.

What I want to know is have any of you with sons found certain diapers to work better than others? I have a daughter and she never leaked through. But I'm assuming it's because his pee-pee is pointed up or something and/or the diaper is just too small?

I know a remedy - get larger diapers (which I have and will put on him tonight before bed) but I want to finish up the Size 2 diapers during the day (he doesn't leak during the day).

Which ones do you like best? Which ones leaked for your sons?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the info ladies!! As I've read through all the responses, I get recommendations across the board so it sounds like there are people who like Huggies just as much as Pampers.

I did put my son (pee pee pointed down) in a Size 3 Huggies brand the last few nights and he wet through once but only through his onsie and not his sleeper and last night he didn't wet through at all. So I'm going to try Pampers or another brand and if he's still wetting through, I may have to change him in the middle of the night.

His daycare teacher did say that she notices he pees alot...maybe he's just got a small bladder or pees alot and there might be nothing I can do about it? I'll keep trying though!

I suggest Pampers. We used the Swaddling Pampers until he he hit size three. He never experienced leakage after that.

I've been buying the Pampers Swaddlers size 2-3 from diapers.com (I've found them at Target only once) because I love the Swaddlers so much and my baby isn't crawling, so don't really need the Cruisers yet. I think these will go up to 22 pounds.

I have 2 boys who are now 7 and almost 9. First, point the pee pee down when you close the diaper. It's not uncomfortable for him and will help a lot with the leaking. We always used white cloud diapers from walmart with no problem. Good luck!

I found huggies diapers to be garbage. My baby can be in a pampers for 12 hours at night and it still doesn't leak. Make sure to point your son down when changing his diaper otherwise it will leak no matter how good the diaper is. You can also put him in a larger diaper at night compared to what he wears during the day. My new favorite diaper is now kushies cloth diapers. Way cheaper, better for the environment and no chemicals on babies skin. They are way easier to use then I thought they would be.

huggies work best for our son, he is 10 months old and just over 20 pounds. as soon as i could, i bought the over night diapers. but the smallest size in overnights is a 4...so it will probably be a while before those will work for you, but the pampers overnights are a little smaller than huggies so maybe you might be able to try those a little sooner. good luck, i know the irritation of wet clothes and bed sheets from them peeing through their diapers.

Huggies all the way!

I have tried Pampers and all kinds leaked in all sizes for my son! I tried Swaddlers, Cruisers, Baby Dry, and even Easy Ups. No matter what, they leak.

Huggies have never given me a problem. I have used Snug & Dry, Natural Fit, Little Movers, and now Pull Ups. They are the best diapers and training pannts around, hands down!

I have tried Babies R Us, Walgreens, Target, and Walmart store brands, as well as generics, Luvs, and others in effort to save some money. Some are better than others, some absorb pretty well, but are nowhere near as soft and moveable as Huggies.

I have learned how to combine sales, coupons and store incentives and I now get Huggies for LESS MONEY per diaper than the generic brands!! I teach couponing classes if you are interested in learning some of these techniques. It is easy and not at all time consuming if you know what to look for and where to look. In one year, I have saved literally hundreds of dollars on diapering products alone!

You might try Huggies Overnights. They are a little more pricey but they are worth it. Our son had the same problem and they hold a lot more at night.

HI, I havent read all of this, but I had the same problem with my son. He was in the weight range for size 3's in huggies but I guess he is tall or has a long torso so he was peeing out of his diapers everynight. He sleeps 11-12 hours, so I decided to try size 4 and never had the problem again. I would say, go with the next size up.

Walgreens used to sell an insert(some what like a pad) that I put in the front of my youngest's diapers @ night because of the same thing...'course I was using the cheaper diapers @ walmart... and the more expensive diapers were just that- too expensive for us, so that was my remedy. and I think Walgreens may have a night time diaper- I could be wrong about that, but... that seems to ring a bell with me. The white cloud diapers were okay too- price and absorbancy.

try a box of Pampers size 2-3 for overnight. we had a similar problem at that age, and the slightly higher waist helped out.

There are inserts you can put into the diaper so they hold more. I found a link to them: http://www.epinions.com/review/Diaper_Doublers/content_29... I used these on my kids and they were great, just hard to find! I think I used to get them at a drug store and Babies R Us, you might have to research this a little, but it was cheaper than surfing for the right brand diaper.

carla, what i have found and i am sure you have too, is that in general, the more money you spend, the better the diaper. the problem is how MUCH you can end up spending. i went with generic for my son, and my favorite were the target brand. i never had a problem with them leaking (i'm only just now having that problem, now that he's three and using white cloud pullups at night - they leak ALL the time) and they are of better quality than the walmart brand. just my experience, hope you find something that works!

I think different brands do work better for different kids. I have two sons and the first peed through Pampers and ended up wearing the deluxe version of Huggies and the second had issues with Huggies and has to wear Pampers. You would think boys would be built the same but its apparent they are not! haha!

I may be the only mom out there who is NOT a fan of Pampers. I take that back, I actually like Baby Dry, but I do NOT like Cruisers despite using Swaddlers when both kids were newborn.

Our son used plain old regular Huggies from Costco until he was potty trained this summer. NO problems with leaking at all.

We also really liked Luvs for him and had no problems with leaking. I'd say the problem is primarily the size as he's likely excreting more volume than it can hold in the front.

Hope that helps.

With my son we used Sam's Club diapers. They always held overnight, even when he wouldn't sleep that long. My daughter is just now moving into them now.

Two other things. Huggies makes an overnight diaper which does hold more. And there are these extra pads that you can put inside a regular diaper that hold alot of liquid. Good luck.

For my son it's pampers baby dry during the day and huggies overnight for bed time. You'll have to try different ones out and see which work the best. My girlfriends 4 month old is 18 Pounds and with thicker thighs he wears cruisers! Good luck!

My 22 month old daughter is still in size 3 diapers, but she was leaking through so we got some of the nighttime diapers. The ones we got are made by Pampers, but Huggies makes them too. I've never tried the Huggies (don't fit my kids well).

Hi Carla,
I know you already have some responses but what we did was buy Nighttime diapers (either Pampers or Huggies) in a size bigger than he is. So if he is in a size 3 during the day I would buy a size 4 in the nighttime diaper. This has been the only thing that has worked for our son. Good luck!

My son had the same problem with leaking only at night. During the day he wears pampers but I put him in the nighttime huggies and they work great. We have not had a single leak and we switched to huggies at night quite awhile ago. You can also try less liquid in the evenings but it is easier just to get bigger nightime diapers. Good luck!

Good Morning,

I had the same problem with my son, who is 11 months old, when he was around the same age as your son. We used Huggies on our daughter and never had any problems. We use Huggies on him as well, and we learned that if we put him in a size larger than he normally would wear, then he doesn't wet through. So far that has worked well. I hope this helps
