Have any of you used Sonlight, as your main homeschooling curriculum? I am thinking of using it when I start homeschooling my son in the next two years. Did you like it, hate it? I'd love some opinions!!

What can I do next?

There are lots of Yahoo Groups for Sonlight, I think you would find it helpful to connect with moms that use this curriculum. The groups are usually seperated by the age group or Core that is being used, but there are some general groups too.

We do not use Sonlight, but I have lots of friends who do and who love it.

Michelle,
We've used Sonlight for 3 1/2 years (Core P 4/5, K, 1, and 2). This year we will be finishing up Core 2, revisiting Core K, and adding in Core P 3/4. We love it for all of the reasons already mentioned: mission focused, literature- based, ability to combine children, etc. I also love that they have everything already scheduled out for you including some supplementals. But, I especially love that I can reuse a core with my other children which saves me LOTS of $$$ in the long run.

SL does offer their own Language Arts; we've added this in too. I'm on the fence as to whether I REALLY like it. Unlike traditional LA, it introduces a new concept and then practices it every so often. Having been taught "old school" the more relaxed approach to grammar in the early grades bothered me a bit so I've chosen to supplement in this area over the years.

For our family, SL has been great. My children love "Box Day" when all of their new books arrive and I love that they are excited about learning! SL has been a wonderful company to work with...their customer service is exceptional!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me.
Blessings!

Wow, how wierd my friend who uses this curriculum just posted this on facebook!!! This is her words exactly...
I love Sonlight! As I mentioned it is literature based with a missions focus. It doesn't hesitate to address issues, but allows parents to address as much or as little as they think is appropriate. It is a classical model with 3- 4 year cycles. We will be in the 1st year of US History. It is very useful with multiple children as you can cover the same history, read alouds, science and bible curriculum with both/all children while keeping them at their own reading/language arts and math ability.

Hope this helps!

I used it for about 6 months before I sold it, I liked a lot about it, my son loved it, but I found it a bit disorganised.

I would use it again, I think they have changed the teachers manual since I used it 2 years ago - you have to be careful to choose the right grade level, my son is an expert reader, so I chose the first grade with advanced readers, he could read the books easily, but the writing and other work is linked to those readers ( which were sitting right at about 3rd grade), and so he missed out on 2 grades of writing instruction and comprehension skills - I would have been better off just choosing first grade regular readers.
I think I would still be using it if it wasn't for this mistake
