My son will be 3 in March and does go on the potty a few times a day but he never asks to go. He always tells me after he poops and sometimes will pee and then tell me to change his diaper. Sometimes he will say its poop but its really just pee. Should I put him on the potty right after he does this? What is the next step?

What can I do next?

My son was a challenging trainee. I remember realizing at some point that he was having a hard time listening to his body. He couldn't pay attention to all the signals from his body, and so even after he started potty training he would wet the bed for a while.

So, I had to start paying attention to his timing, like after he eats how long does it take him to do either. And so, I started a potty schedule, and just started putting him on the potty when I thought it should be time and letting him stay there until something happened (within a few minutes). I also started asking him to pay attention to what his body is telling him, you know-the full feeling, etc.

I think the fact that he is telling you is a step in the right direction. At least he knows that he has something in his paints and need to get rid of it. Just think if he was not saying anything but wondering around until you smelled it.LoL
Is he wearing pull-ups? When i was training my boys I would let the participate in the clean up. That means taking off you own pull-ups and learning to put the clean pair on. I would also make them sit on the potty before putting on the clean pull-ups. Also, sort of learn his poop schedule I believe they all have one so you can judge when it's time to start setting on the potty.
You still have plenty of time both my boys were not fully potty trained (meaning I did not have to tell them to go to the potty and they were in underwear) until they were at least 3 1/2.

He is still rather young to be fully trained so just be patient.

As for ditching the diapers, how many times a day do you want to be swishing out poopy underpants in the toilet or how many pairs of under wear are you willing to throw away each week. My friend actually went to underwear early and she was so grossed out by the mess and cleaning up pee of her carpet. She decided she would just buy new underwear and throw the soiled ones away. They are nearly a dollar a pair at Wal-Mart so I can't do that. I think pull ups are the best way unless your floors are sealed and it's really easy to sanitize large areas. By the time he is a full four he should be totally daytime potty trained.

Can you sort of judge when he's going to go and put him on the potty?

Might be time to ditch the diapers completely and go with undies only (Pull Up at night).
