Son Sleeping on Floor Instead of Bed

Hi Mommas-
We transitioned our son into a toddler bed a couple of months ago and he slept in it at first. Now he prefers to sleep on the floor. Any of your children do that? Not sure what the reasoning behind it is. We got him a new bed but it hasn't been shipped yet. It's one of those convertible beds. It looks like a race car so I'm hoping that will inspire him to sleep in it :). Thanks!

What can I do next?

K.! I could have written this! My son did exactly the same thing. For some reason, he hated his toddler bed. He'd fall asleep on the floor of his room ("like a dog", as my mother said!). Even if I'd move him into the bed when he was sleeping, he'd get out again & go right to the floor.
I look back now and laugh, but I hated the thought of him sleeping on the floor. It was like his whole room was a crib! LOL pillows and blankets everywhere.......
I'm betting he'll LOVE the race car bed. Good luck!

My nephew never sleeps in his bed. My SIL doesn't care as long as he's sleeping! I wouldn't worry about it.

did you ask him why he prefers to sleep on the ground? Does he do it at daycare? I slept on the floor of my closet with some old couch cussions and a sleeping bag when I was small. My parents thought it was just a phase but it wasn't. They finally asked me why I was doing that and I told them that the room wasn't dark enough and it hurt my head (I started getting migraines at about 7years old). They fixed the problem by getting a shade for my window and I went back to sleeping in my bed.

Just read Val B's post and she could be right. It is hot in the St. L right now. Ask him. Ask if anything would make him more comfy too because atleast you'll feel better and maybe he will too.

My kids don't do that unless they're having a sleepover, but I guess there's nothing wrong with it. I'm sure he's fine. I used to prefer the floor when I was a teenager b/c it helped my back relax more.

HAH I dont think I know kid that doesnt sleep on the floor or a couch. Its new its interesting and floors for some odd reason are comfortable at a young age. I personally could have slept on concrete as a child and still gotten a good nights rest. Its normal, I susually just pick my child up and put them back in their bed before i go to sleep

My brother and I did that in the summer because it was cooler and we could find the best spot for AC and fans. (we are in AZ) I don't know what the weather is like where you are at, but maybe he found a cooler more comfortable spot for the summer.

My kids both went through a sleeping on the floor stage (and still do sometimes). They think it is fun. My 6 year old has a small sun tent set up in her room right now. Last night she slept in her tent. The night before in her bed. No big deal as long as it is not effecting their sleep. :)

K.,

My daughter went though this phase when we converted to the toddler bed. At first it was because she knew nothing could be under her when she was on the floor. A set of rope lights under the toddler bed helped for a about a year. Then she said the bed was to hard. We transitioned to a regular mattress and she quit sleeping on the floor. I think the new race car bed will help.

my oldest was like that. he slept on a hardwood floor more than in his beds. he had a toddler bed and a twin size bed in his room because we felt the same way and bought both when he kept sleeping on the floor. We would find him anywhere, on the floor in the middle of his room, in the hallway, on the living room floor. He never took his blanket or pillow with him, just slept on the hard floor. Well he is 18 now and still prefers the floor over his bed. Our other 2 kids ages 15 and 10 don't mind the floor either and on weekends they always prefer to sleep on the floor in the living room instead of their own beds. It is the highlight of their week to have sleeping bag night on the living room floor on Friday nights and watch movies. They have TVs and DVD players in their rooms but rarely use them. In fact the boys feel that beds in their rooms are taking up space and if they had their way there wouldn't be beds in their rooms but I have seen too many families in trouble with DFS for not having beds for their kids so I told them they have to keep their beds because we would get in trouble if they didn't have a bed to sleep on. We bought them really nice thick, pillow top mattresses so it's not like their beds aren't comfortable. They just prefer the floor.

I just didn't push the issue of where they sleep--in their bed or on the floor-- as long as they get a good nights sleep.

My daughter started doing this recently. I would love to say it was right after some change like a new bed, but nope. She is almost 4 years old and it really bugs me. I have spoken with one of her doctors about it. Her response was, as long as she is sleeping where is not so important.

Our 3-yr-old daughter did that for a couple of months after we moved to a new house and had a baby. She finally stopped and was in bed for 6 months but just started sleeping on the floor again this week (no cause I can discern). Sigh. I try not to make a big deal about it. She's not allowed to get out of her big girl bed (except to go to the bathroom). I tell her as long as she stays in the space that is taken up by her blanket, that's her "bed" and she can keep sleeping on the floor. If she starts running around, though, it's back to her actual bed.

My son will go through phases sleeping on the floor too. Sometimes, he's just more comfortable that way, it's more fun, it's too hot, it's too cold, etc. Hopefully, the race car will help!

Sometimes my kid will empty his toy box and sleep in that. Sometimes on the closet floor(its a big closet) with the door closed. Sometimes in a little tent his older brother will set up for him. Once I tried moving him out of closet he got so upset and didn't go back to sleep for the rest of the night and I tried the move around 11. I don't mind when he does it as long as he is getting a good nights sleep. He gets himself all set up with his blanket and pillow and his doggie and he is good to sleep. This is not an every night thing, maybe once a week but as long as he is safe its ok with me.
