Son Needs Eye Exam and Possible Glasses... (Revised)

Hubby and I believe our son is in need of glasses - I am wondering where would be the best 'kid-friendly' and cost-effective place to go? Son is four, and we are required to have this for Kindergarten, too. (He was not interested in the exam they gave and didn't pass it, but he's squinting all the time for distance.)

I'd take him to my eye doc, but I don't want to pay out the nose for frames and lens that could be broken... and I'm not comfortable with him for my son. He doesn't seem 'kid-friendly' so I'm going with my gut on that one...

I had to take him to an ophthalmologist when he scratched his cornea when he was younger, and his eyes were fine, he had no other conditions and I am educated enough in health where I do feel I would notice something more. I work on my son consistently with my work so I am confident I would catch something if it were more than just weak eye sight, as I have before. (Both mommy and daddy needed eye glasses early, so I think our son is doomed - due to genealogy~ poor kid! LOL!)

Any help is appreciated! :)

(We are out of Madison Hts area... so preferably somewhere close by)

What can I do next?

Childrens Eye Care is fantastic! It would be a little bit of a drive for you but well worth it. Dr. John Baker was who we started with there but he is now in a chief position at Childrens Hospital so we started seeing Dr. Lisa Bohra. She is equally as gifted with caring for children and performed surgery on my daughters eyes two years ago. She also does her regular check-ups. They have offices in Dearborn and at the new Stilson Center on Garfield near 19 Mile (Clinton Twp).

Once we have the prescription for the glasses, we order them through a local optometry place that takes our insurance and go with the flex frames and scratch resistant lenses for kids to help make them more durable.

you really want to take him to an opthamologist... a medical dr that specializes in eyes..

he could have a lazy eye or some other condition

Conrad giles is a pediatric opthamologist.. I think he has an office in warren.

the opthamoligist shoudl be covered under your medical insurance because he is a medical dr..

as for the glasses.. most places will sell you insurance for the frames... in case they are lost or broken..

I took my lil one to Dr. O'Malley, he was amazing...awesome with lil ones. Works with all the NICU babies from St John Hospital; but mine lil one went to him for possible lazy eye(strong family history); thankful she is fine. He was just awesome though.

check with your insurance for a opthamologist. You cannot take child to any eye dr till after there 8 years old before that the need an othamologist. there are three I know of one is dr. ogawa hes through st john and I really didn't care for him he takes too long. The second one is dr. curkowski he is through Beaumont and he is wonderful and they get in and out. He has done eye surgery on my son. Dr omally is good too very highly recommended but my insurance doesn't cover him. Hes in grose pointe.

Hi A. - my name is K. and I would like to HIGHLY recommend our eye doctor to your family. The office is located at Gratiot and Cass in downtown Mt Clemens (Clinton Twp). The Dr is A. Fredal-LaCroix. She has a fantastic staff and an additional Dr whose name is Mike B....(I can never remember his last name) phone ###-###-####. Extremley honest, knowledgeable personnel....specializing in working with children and low vision patients. My husband and I have both had eye exams within the past 5 months, we are extremley pleased. I also have a special needs adult sister, who needs much tender loving care when it comes to any exam with her eyes....Dr Mike was FANTASTIC with her!! I have worn glasses /contacts since I was 10 years old (a few years ago) and these Dr's are fast becoming my favorite! I trust this information is helpful for you...have a great weekend.

Try WalMart. My kids just had their eye exams there and we have been going there for the last several years. One of the nice things about Walmart, is if you get their glasses and something happens and they are damaged beyond repair as long as you have all the peices they replace them for free...Which in my daughter's case was a good thing. A couple years ago we were in there soo much they recognized me on sight. The lawn mower, the dog, and I don't remember what else, but you get the idea.

Good luck
Chelle
