Socks or Slippers for Dad's Cold Feet?

Hi Mamas,

My 87 year old dad has emphesema and congestive heart failure. He's doing reasonably well, but his circulation isn't great. He has very little energy to get something on his feet. We're looking for wide, easy to get on, cozy slippers or socks for him. They can't be too tight, and he wants to avoid wool, I think.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Because of my medical condition I have to have something on my feet all the time. When I wear slippers, I forget I'm just wearing slippers and will walk out of the house with just them on. I don't do that when I wear the slipper socks with the tread on the bottom. I can wear them around and still put shoes on over them if needed. Plus the tread on the bottom helps so I don't slip in the kitchen or the bathroom where we have tile.

Hi P.-

I would suggest going to a medical supply store. There, they will have the 'slipper socks' that hospitals use (with the 'rubberized' tread)...They will come in a variety of colours, but more importantly, bigger sizes with more ease in getting them on!

Best to your dad!

We used the slipper socks from medical supply stores for my Dad, they have the white treads on them. We eventually had to put them on him ourselves when he couldn't anymore, but for the time he could they were the easiest to do, and not tight. Also, as being cold became more and more of a problem because of the poor circulation (he had kidney and congestive heart failure) it was easy to put more than one pair on his feet at a time. And, when he began hospice that was the type of socks they suggested and preferred and we already had them.

Hallmark (yes, I know of all stores) has these cotton like cozy slippers, easy to get on and they have little things on the bottom so that you won't slip... but they aren't too obvious in that the slipper is still VERY pliable and soft..
they have em for about 12 bucks... They are brightly colored...

my husband LOVES his.. :)

good luck

I have poor circulation in one foot and can't stand wearing a sock to bed. I prefer an extra blanket thrown over just my feet.

If he prefers socks, here's a goodie that makes getting socks on easier... and still has him being as independent as possible.

My M. uses it... she broke her hip 1 1/2 years ago, and for a while, she wasn't supposed to bend at the hip. You slide the sock onto the plastic tube support... that stretches the sock a bit... then slide the foot in the "tube" .... and then pull the sock aid on through (past the heel) which then leaves the sock in place.

Really a nifty little gadget!
