My daughter is 7 1/2 months old. I plan on breastfeeding her until she turns one. I have "prepared" myself (well, as much as one can) for biting. I did not, however, know about snatching. I go to her daycare everyday to nurse her. She is so nosey (she came by that honestly!) and everytime someone talks or walks by, she has to look and see what is going on. Well, admist her inquisitive nature, she doesn't "break her latch" and snatches. How can I effectively discourage this?!?
I pretty much just tried breaking her when I could... and dealing with it when I couldn't. I have since quit my job in order to stay at home with her... so this hasn't really been an issue lately! Thanks everyone for all your advise!! :-)
Being that she's so young it would be hard to try and teach her not to. No matter where u are try and find a place where no one is maybe a different room. If u cant then just try breaking the latch from her yourself when she does that to train her to do the same.
Well H., I am still feeding my baby who is 12 months. He bit me at about 8 months and broke the skin. I was in a lot of pain. I pushed through though. I was determined to get to 12 months feeding him. I had a similar problem with him pulling and looking around. You might want to try going in the bathroom or closet where the baby cannot see or hear anything else. Another thing I have done to prevent disctractions is go to your car and play some soothing music. That worked for me. I wish you the best for you and your baby.

I breastfed until my daughter turned 18 months, (didn't plan it that long but she was hard to let go) and she did the snatching as well. She would turn her head really fast if she heard a noise or someone's voice. I've tried holding her head still but she resisted the only effective way I could get her NOT to do that was to be in a quiet room with little distraction, I hate to say it but that was the only way she did pull away from my breast with a grip. Hi H.! Thumbs up for nursing your little one. I nurse my 22 month old and remember this happening. I find that turning so he can see the action while nursing, like me facing the wall or going to a quite room helps this. It does quit after a while and I didn't really do anything. I don't cover up and never have, out of my child's comfort and eduction on what breast should be used for :) Good luck with this!
I just wanted to add that I wouldn't breastfeed in the bathroom (since it is gross and feces can be found over 10 feet from a toilet) but I can't believe I didn't recomend a nursing necklace. Any necklace will do but my son really loved the one I got from www.nursingnotions.com :)
Have you tried covering her head with like a blanket when you breastfeed so that she can't see anything else?
My first born did that and I hated it. When he would do it, I would tell him that he was all finished eating. I didn't want to be a "vending machine". Pretty soon he got the picture and would eat when he was hungry until he was finished.

I breastfed both of my boys. I wore a breastfeeding shaw when I went out in public, I covered myself with that,(for the respect of those that did not want to see my breast and I respected myself not to let the perverted men see my breast). When I had that on they never Snatched but if I was at home or at a family members house and did not wear the shaw they did do that to me, I think it helped them to be covered real well with the shaw. Not sure if you use one or not, but if you do and they still do that try keeping your hand on your breast and prepare your self to help her latch off. You can also get a book about breastfeeding there are several if you don't already have one.
