If you are interested in a meal replacement shake formulated for children that tastes just like a chocolate milkshake and is more nutritious than ovaltine, let me know.
My three year old doesn't eat much. She would prefer to live on chocolate milk. I bought Ovaltine because at least she's getting a few vitamins with her sugar, but it's still a poor substitute for balanced nutrition. I was thinking of making some sort of smoothie for her. She loves milkshakes. I've looked at some recipes, but they all say vague things like "add ice" or put in a bunch of blueberries. I can't follow recipes like that. I need measurements! I tried making a smoothie once, and it turned out like soup. I don't want to waste ingredients with the trial and error of coming up with a recipe. Does anyone have a good recipe with measurements that makes a nutritious smoothie?

I really cant provide measurements BUT I make smoothies all the time - literally almost everyday and they are way too easy. I add ice to the blender (maybe 5-6 cubes), frozen fruit (I usually add a few different kinds and add maybe 1/2 cup or less each), a bunch of vanilla yogurt (5-6 heaping spoonfuls), and sometimes I add milk but I find it makes it really frothy so I usually add pure oranje juice, or half milk half juice. The liquid part is where you can screw up but its nice because you add what you think is right and go from there. If you dont add enough liquid the thing wont blend so I add a bit turn it on see what happens and add more in little bits as needed. A little tip - if you use a banana I suggest skipping the milk because it makes them really thick and frothy

1 Banana (frozen is good, but either way)
1/2 c vanilla yogurt
1 c milk
Yummy! You can add ovaltine to it if she likes the flavor. You can add a tbsp of peanut butter if she likes that flavor.
Or
1 banana
1/2 c vanilla yogurt
1 c apple juice
Or
1/2 c blueberries
1/2 c strawberries
1/2 c strawberry yogurt
1 c milk
many variables. Go with your daughter's tastes, find one she loves and make it again and again!
1/2 c frozen fruit
1/2 c juice
1/2 c flavored yogurt
Blend. Drink. Enjoy.
I don't usually use measurements, it is something that just takes some practice. Try this, just make 1 or 2 cups of Ovaltine and add in a frozen banana or two! I like to peel the bananas and then freeze them in freezer bags to use in smoothies. I do have a recipe for Orange Julious, but it is not really that healthy unless you add stuff to it like raw spinach (wash it first!) or frozen bananas or strawberries, btu you can use it as a base anyway:
Orange Julious
Orange Julius
½ of a 12 oz. can of frozen Orange Juice
1 Cup water
1 Cup milk
½ Cup sugar (you can use less to make it healthier)
1 tsp. vanilla
10-12 ice cubes
Blend on high until it is smooth.
If you add frozen fruit to it, do not use as much ice. You can also substitute yogurt for the milk. Try adding and substituting all kinds of things and see what turns out good! Have fun!
We make them all summer long since its so hot here, we practically live off them! I don't use measurements and mine are so thick they are like yummy shakes!!! I pour in maybe a cup of milk and a big spoon of yogurt, a scoop of protein powder and then some frozen berries. Sometimes I add a banana if we have them. Just experiment, if they are too runny, you have too much liquids. Good luck!!!
Ok I have a basic recipe that you can tweek as you go to decide what you like and what you don't like. This is what I started with, but then stopped measuring and adding things to it.
This only makes about 1:
1/2-1 cup frozen blueberries (depending on how fruity you want it)
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
1/4 orange juice
Throw it all in your blender and blend to the smoothness you want.
Obviously you can use any kind of frozen berries/fruit you want, and if it's frozen you generally don't need ice added too it for the frozen chilled feel. You can obviously add things like whey for protein and other things to boost vitamins, from the health section of the pharmacy or grocery store. You can play around with different flavor combos, but I was always a blueberry fan. Hope this was helpful!
Check out the Vitamix website and click on recipes. There you find a lot of them. I would assume that even if you don't have a Vitamix blender, a lot of these will work.
My son loves strawberry smoothies. I use the yoplait yogurts that come in a cup, I dump in the whole cup either strawberry or vanilla flavor. Then a cup of frozen or fresh strawberries and then I just grab a handfull of ice from the freezer. I usually add 1/3 cup of water so it's not too thick.
I sometimes do banana ones for my daughter. One banana, a cup of milk and I sprinkle it with a lot of cinnamon and a handfull of ice. I've tried both and they are really good.
