Hate to say this but it comes with the territory. I've always felt it was a way of preparing us for the lack of sleep when the baby arrives.

If your wife is getting some exercise and has tried basic relaxation techniques, tea - sex - that's the type of stuff that might work naturally. But, if she is really needing to take the edge off her sleeplessness then valerian root is just wonderful. It can be found anywhere supplements are sold - from walmart to cvs. The bottle usually says to take 3, but start with 1 if there is no effect then try 2. (I needed 2 for awhile and then went down to 1).

Try this before doing the heavy pharmaceutical approach. Just b/c it's "safe" during pregnancy doesn't make it a healthy or smart choice.
Valerian root is all natural, has no side effects, and won't cause drowsiness in the morning. It's also safe while breastfeeding, so it's great for helping to settle back into sleep when you're getting up several times a night with the baby, but doesn't put you in such a heavy place that you are unaware or would sleep through the smallest whimper.

can't recommend it enough.

Congratulations!

Maybe warm tea or relaxation techniques, if her back is beginning to bother her, perhaps a body pillow, but, and this sounds harsh, get used to it if, after all the relaxation and lovely pillows, sleep still does not come. I don't know any pregnant woman who did not go through bouts of insomnia. With my first pregnancy I wondered why I was not sleeping. With my second I used the night to read, and it was much more enjoyable. I only had one child then and could sneak in more naps than now. If she can, she should try to sleep when her body tells her to, as in naps. And this amount of sleep will seem like heaven compared to how much you guys may or may not get when your baby arrives. Good luck and congrats.

There are a lot of reason she might be waking up. Needing to pee, uncomfortable, acid reflux, etc. These you can do to minimize getting up for these reasons. 1. Don't drink a lot after dinner, go to the bathroom several times before going to bed. 2. Get a full body pillow, a pregnancy pillow shaped like a C or any other such pillow to help get comfortable. 3. A triangle or wedge type pillow helps with acid reflux at night. Also don't eat for a hour before going to bed. And sometime a heating pad on the upper stomach helps also try snuggling a teddy bear to your stomach. If acid reflux is an issue there are a lot of different medicines you can take. You can also try apple cider vinegar, add 1 Tablespoon to a small glass of water and drink it before each time you eat. 4. You can try a warm bath to relax you. 5. Try stretching before bedtime. 6. Try a little exercise during the day, walking sometimes helps. 7. Read a book to get sleepy and hopefully you can stay asleep. 8. You can take Tylenol PM if you feel you need it.

Good luck,
L.

It probably is hormone fluctuation messing with your sleep cycle. It also happened to me during both of my pregnancies, although I think I was closer to 5 months at the time. Up every twenty minutes. It was horrible, but passed. Good luck!

Before trying drugs, I would recommend getting enough safe, healthy exercise. It is medically proven to help reduce stress, and will certainly help tire her out in a more natural way.

Congratulations and best of luck with the pregnancy to both of you!

tylenol pm works for me and it was what my doctor recomended. so I know it is safe while pregnant. as long as you only take the amont it says on the bottle. tell her to try it, really it helps! she really needs all the sleep she can get before that baby comes!
