Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that vaseline is the DEVIL when it comes to fixing dry skin. There is some stuff I bought from my daughter (who is 10) from Wegmans. If you do not have a Wegmans by you, Look up Shikai Borage lotion. It seriously is great. Let me know if you need help finding it. Good luck!! :) D.

Vaseline has a new product called Intensive Rescue ...something.. balm. It is in a white cylindrical container with a dark blue cap. It is sort of inbetween a lotion and a more greasy Vaseline petroleum jelly/Aquafor. It works wonders on my kids!

My son has dry skin as well...try the Aveeno line for children or Eucerin creme mixed with a little A&D it does not leave them smelling baby fresh but it does wonders for the skin. I usually do that after a bath and then use Johnson and Johnson to give them that good smell

Try Aquaphor....from the makers of Eucerin cream. It comes in
a jar like vaseline and is thick like vaseline but is works wonderfully. Put it on her before bed...not her face or hands and I think you'll see a quick improvement. Use it sparingly and massage it into her skin. It is a great way to get her to relax before bed too!

For after bath soft skin, I always use Johnson & Johnson moisturizer (pink one).....smells so nice and works so well.

hi O., dont use vaseline. try aquaphor. i have also used burts bees buttermilk lotion, hard to find, but so nice and light and smells sooooo good. my sister swears by aveeno. also, remember that bathing her is very drying, she doesnt need a bath every day unless she is dirty. i have a 2 1/2 year old too, i know she is a constant mess, but try not to bathe her every day, maybe just wipe down the messes. and when she does bathe, keep it short and sweet, and not too hot. a humidifier in the house might help, it helps us with lots of issues, not just skin. take care, D.

I always put Johnsons baby cream on my kids right after their bath. It really works.

My son has really dry skin as well and I found that Eucerin calming creme works best to keep his skin moisturized and itchy free.

My daughter has dry skin as well. I use Eucerin calming creme and also use Aveeno for Eczema which has been working well. My pediatrician recommended Aquafor but haven't tried it yet because the others have been working well. Hope this helps!

The problem with most moisturizers on the market is that they contain mineral oil (MO). Since MO is an occlusive ingredient, meaning it just coasts the surface of the skin, it only does two things. It creates a barrier so any other ingredients in the product that may be beneficial are not actually absorbing and treating the skin. And since the MO is coating the skin, it is also suffocating it, and not allowing it to breathe. Skin is the largest organ on the body, and is usually highly neglected or treated improperly. The best defense against problems with your skin is a great offense, what you use on your skin is very important. Also what you put on your skin takes less than 30 seconds to absorb straight to your blood stream, this is why smoking patches and birth control patches are effective. So it really is very important that you understand what you use on yourself and especially your skin.

Nature's Blessing - it's an all natural pomade for the hair and skin. My daughter was getting little patches of excema, and this is the only thing that worked. And, as a bonus, it's cheap! You can also try pure shea butter. I know other people who swear by it. Hope this helps!

A dermatologist suggested "moisturel" for me years ago when my skin was so dry it flaked like dandruff. I have used it ever since. It is a bit more expensive than some others but does the trick. It is not greasy and has no fragrance. Good Luck... MamaSearle

Have you tried JOhnson's Naturals stick or Aveeno Baby Lotion? I love the Aveeno thing with oatmeal. I also use moisturizing baby wash by J&J.

I shop from a health and wellness company that has a safer products. They have lotion called Renew. It beats any lotion hands down and doesn't have harsh chemicals and preservatives in them. People rave about how their dry skin and excema dramatically improves. It cleared up my dry skin and helped my nephew's excema clear up completely. It is not greasy yet moisturizes your skin all day.

I use a new product called Desitin clear multi pupose ointment. It is great, I have a 5 month old and use it on her face, as she is teething. I use it 4-5 times a day. It is like vasaline, but for kids, you can also use in on her bottom area too. Sold anywhere, but Walmart has it the cheapest. They have coupons to and 2 sizes. Hope that helps, it is great.

My 5 year old daughter skin is also very dry. I sometimes use Avon skin so soft bath oil in her bath and make sure you keep the water luke warm not hot. If you are putting her in a large tub, be careful because the tub can be slippery when you get in. After her bath make sure you rinse the tub with hot water to get rid of the excess oil in the tub I tend to make her bath too hot which adds to drying her skin. Also I give her a bath every other day, and try to keep them short. Aveeno puts out a good bath lotion and oatmeal bath that I also use on her.

Aquaphor by Eucerine works really well. Better than vaseline.

I see you already have a ton of responses so I'll just say..Do not use mineral oil!! It is occlusive, which means it doesnt penetrate into the skin to heal the dryness. It just sits on the surface coating it!

Also there was recently a huge buzz on MSNBC about 'phtalates' in skin care lotions may be causing reproductive problems in baby's. These are not listed in the ingredient list and are in ANY product that has fragrance!! Scary stuff!!

You need pure essential oils. They are SAFE and You will immediately see and feel how they soak into the skin and right away your daughter's skin is all better!! I am a lisenced esthetician and work for a plastic surgeon doing skincare/peels/laser etc. So I have an extensive skincare background.

I have very dry skin that cracks and bleeds in the Winter. I inherited it from my parents and unfortunately two of my three children (ages almost 11, 9, and 7) have been blessed with it as well (sarcasm). I have found one thing that works if I use it consistently, and that is the Mary Kay Satin Hands set. I do not sell Mary Kay and I am not a large consumer of cosmetics, but this three step program has worked miracles for me! My bleeding hands in the Winter have in the past brought me to tears! For years I tried different things, including going to a dermatologist. The Satin Hands system includes a coarse liquid soap, a lotion, and a thicker lotion (similar to Vaseline). I do steps one and two in the AM and step three before bed. For break through cracks, I use an invisible band aid kit - usually I buy the generic one but I know Band Aid brand makes one as well. Eucerin Calming Cream and Eucerin's Aquaphor are both great. The Aquaphor is very thick and great to use at night when they can't escape from their pj's!

My daughter suffers from dry skin. Her pediatrician (excuse my spelling) suggested Aquaphor or Eucerin. Aquaphor is like petroleum based, but last longer than Vasoline. The Eucerin lotion is like a heavy lotion. I tried them all but I prefer Eucerin.

Vaseline is actually petroleum (mineral oil) and does not let anything penetrate in or out of your skin. It is also the second leading cause of skin aging, second to the sun - (Johns Hopkins study). It makes sense it is not helping your daughter at all becase it's occlusive and is just creating a barrier not actually absorbing or doing anything beneficial.

Have you tried Aquaphor by Eucerin? It is a vaseline type cream but it does penetrate the skin where as vaseline does not. You can get it at Target, Walmart...etc.

My son has very dry skin/eczema and his pediatrician told me to try Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream. It really works well and it doesn't leave his skin greasy. His dr. also said that the vaseline doesn't let the skin breath enough. Hope it works for you too!

Have you tried the Aveeno products. My son (12 now) has always had dry and sensitive skin and I've used there body wash and skin cream since he was a baby. My daughter-in- law uses the baby line of Aveeno for my 4 mo. old grandson who also suffers from dry skin and rashes with any other products. Good Luck!

Both my 2 year old and 10 mth have very dry skin. Actually I should say "had". They went to the dermatologist and she recommend using Aveeno Lotion (not the baby Aveeno). I love it. My kids have the softest skin and it even cleared up my youngest exema. I personally like the Aveeno with the green cap. It seems to be the best for me kids. You can get it at Target, Walmart, CVS, etc. It is a bit pricy about $8-10 a bottle, but I tell you it is worth it. I keep one in every room. Good luck,

Try Sarna creme for sensitive skin, my son with very dry skin has been using it when his skin is very dry and so far I have not heard or seen any problems..

Try Aquaphor--it's like a cross between Eucerin and Vaseline. It's great on my daughter's skin year-round.

Have you tried Aveeno??? My children 4 & 2yrs old both have very dry skin, and often turns into exczyma. I have found Aveeno to work the best (the non-scented type)or even Lubriderm. Aquaphor is known to be the BEST!!! But it's also rather expensive. I would give Aveeno a try.

My son has/had super dry skin (in all seriousness he's like an alligator, you take his shirt off and you can shake the dry skin flakes out of it..that's how bad) and I finally after almost 3 years is it finally under control.

We use Aquaphor/Eucerin (is good too but not as moisturizing) right after a bath to seal in the moisture. It's pricey but it helps. If that doesn't work you might need to do more things to help ease the dryness. For us, just the Aquaphor didn't work. I bathe him using Cetaphil skin cleanser, then right after he's done I coat him with Mineral oil or Vitamin E oil then pat dry and I moisturize with Aquaphor. We also moisturize a few times a day. We also have a very good prescription but I'm not sure how severe your daughter's skin is you may not need that.

Righ tnow his skin is "normal" so we just moisturize once a day but once you can manage to get her skin under control it will get better.

Try using baby Aquaphor. It's incredibly effective. Good luck!

You can try Aveeno lotion which works pretty well for my daughter who has dry skin too. Some people use Aquaphor Ointment or the Aquaphor Calming Creme lotion. Hope these help. Good luck.

vaseline is the worst thing to use on anyone's face, even adults. clogging of the pores can happen and if it gets near eyes it can clog tear ducts. try using something more gentle, such as aveno, or johnson and johnson.

Have you tried Aquaphor? I like that better than vasoline. Also, give your baby fewer baths and use a humidifier in your home/apt. and baby's room.

They also have an online video that tells you what this lotion can do for anyone with very dry skin/eczema. It relieves the skin immediately. Used regularly will alleviate the problem. It's all natural. I don't sell. I speak from experience. We stopped using prescription medications when we saw the results of using Renew. Good luck.

I have twin boys who had fairly bad exzema. There is a lotion called Cetaphil that has helped tremendously. It is pretty expensive - $7 or $8 for a 20 oz bottle, but well worth it, and it lasts for months. I also like it because it isn't scented, and not greasy like vasoline (I use it in the winter when my skin is dry too!) Cetaphil also makes a moisurizing cleanser for baths. Hope this helps

Instead of Vaseline, try using organic or regular Apricot Kernal Oil. You could also try using Shea Butter, although the Apricot Kernal Oil will eventually absorb, while the Shea Butter tends to leave a "film". Actually, it's great for the lips, instead of something like Chapstick.

I buy my apricot kernal oil in the grocery store. There are also "natural" and alternative Websites you can check, for products.

www.purecastilesoap.com, also known as www.elysiandream.com sells soap, oil, lip balm, shampoo, etc. I buy from them regularly too and am pleased with the products.

www.refreshinglyfree.com has multiple products from multiple companies, not products they make, but there is a good selection. They even sell non-chemical dryer sheets and the natural version of Febreze! I am also happy with my purchases from this site.

When I was little, my doctor gave my mom Eucerin for my skin, which you can buy straight off the shelf, now. I'm not sure if it's the same exact formula, but it still has a good reputation.

My DD gets extremely dry skin and eczema. We were told not to bathe her every night (she doesn't get overly dirty, and if she smashes food in her hair we just wash it over the kitchen sink), and use a really gentle body wash like Dove Sensitive (no fragrance.) A peds. nurse also suggested using Eucerin cream (the kind that comes in the pot, not the pump... see if there's a store brand as this can be costly), but we also love Aveeno lotions with colloidal oatmeal. You can find this in the bath care section.

Try Aquaphor. It's expensive, but worth it. It worked for my and my son's skin when nothing else I tried (including some prescription meds) hadn't.

AQUAPHOR - or the store brand version of it (CVS makes one and displays it on the shelf right next to Aquaphor), and only short baths in not very hot water every other night. Check with the pediatrician next time to see if it's excema, for which there are prescription treatments. My son has a mild case and we use the Aquaphor every night and that does it. Good luck!

Hi O.! I just wanted to advise that you not use anything on your child's skin that can further irritate it - anything with chemicals, fragrance or parabens can damage your child's skin or cause allergic reactions. I have had good luck in the past with Aquafor in my kids dry skin - but even that is not perfect because it has petrolatum, which is made from petroleum and get easily get contaminated in the manufacturing process. I personally now use an all organic skin care range called MiEssence. I use their Soothing Moisturizer for sensitive skin on my 3 month old daughter's dry cheeks and it is great! Try using a lotion not vasoline it might be cloging the pores so that the skin is not doing what it supposed to. A Baby lotion like J&J Shea&Cocoa Butter, as well as their baby wash w/mosturizing lotion in it.

aquaphor from the drugstore or babies r us is wonderful. cetaphil cream is what my pediatrician reccomends. you can also try the aveeno line for babies with dry skin supposed to be really good.

Eucerin and Aquafor works great

Stay away from any kind of soap, it only dries the skin further. Vaseline clogs pores.

Try Aquaphor. It is thicker than vaseline and creates another layer to keep the moisture in and the dryness away.

Hydration always starts from the inside. Make sure she drinks enough water. There are baby/childrens bath products that might help. Hold the bubbles they are not good. maybe bath a littl cooler and not everyday. Then use a good quality hydrating lotion for dry skin. I like eucerine. Vaseline seals pours and could be part of the problem. Check your laundry detergent too. Make sure it is mild.

Cetaphil lotion works very good for dry skin. You can get it at the food or drug store. My granddaughter has eczema and it really helped her. Good luck.

Hi, in response to your question...When my daughter was little she had the same problem.I also tried vasoline and it too didn't do much .I would advise you to take her to her doctor . They can prescribe this special lotion/cream that is very effective for babies dry skin . It stinks a little but does wonders .

Aquaphor or cetaphil body creme

The cream I use for my 5 year old and two year old daily in the winter is from the company 'Weleda' and has 'Calendula' in it. (Made for kids) It's a orange tube...and it is wonderful. Some Health Food Stores carry it here in CT. Look it up on the Internet.

HI O., My 15 month old son has dry skin too. We live in upstate NY-so the cold air doesn't help. I have heard that not bathing them every day helps-water actually dries them out more. I notice on Wesley's skin right after a bath it can seem more dry. I use Burt's Bees apricot oil. It smells really good and seems to relieve him a bit too. I just coat it on-but warm weather will probably make a difference too! Good luck-K.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has really dry skin as well. We have found that limiting her baths (especially in the winter) to every other night and using Eucerin cream every night before bed has really helped.

Using Vasoline is like putting petroleum on your daughter's skin, in fact it is petroleum. Petroleum comes off the top of oil when it is refined. Skin cannot breathe with this on it and when you have dry skin, this just sits on top and does nothing. My grandson has dry skin also, my daughter uses Arbonne. You can go onto ____@____.com and on the top you will see Shop Online, click on that and go to ABC Baby Care. There is also a conditioning oil under Specialty products. My daughter uses the baby cream and a drop or two of the conditioning oil. Hope this helps!

My son has eczema and I use Cetaphil cream on his skin and the body wash as well. The lotion is good but the cream is better. It's pricey but worth it. Also I use all free detergent, it has no perfumes or dyes which help with the itching. Another thing I do is after his bath when his skin is a little damp I put baby oil on his skin and then the Cetaphil cream. It seems to help him.

When reading through the responses you've already received, I agree...a safer, natural, proactive approach is the answer that I've found to most of the problems out there. My children have very sensitive skin, and my skin had trouble adjusting to this NY winter weather (we are from Florida), but we use Renew lotion, and it works better than anything else I've tried. It costs less too.

Same thing with my little guy. I have used a little bit of everything and I find that Eucerin cream works the best. It's sold in all stores including grocery stores. It's safe for babies, the doctor actually recommended it.

This is going to sound REALLY odd but one of my patients swears by it. She suffers from extremely dry skin esp in the winter. Ben Gay!!! You can get the odorless and maybe your little girl won't smell like she is 90! Try it for a little but I poked fun at her when she told me about this but she stuck to her guns and LOVES what it has done for her hands. She says after just a little while, you can't detect any odor either! Worth a shot!??!?!

My daughter also has dry skin. I use Eucerin and that really helps. Sometimes she needs a little hydrocortizone (1%) for excema patches. Try the eucirin- I've also heard shea butter will help.

Hydration is super important. Please offer her lots of water every day!

Most of the creams that were mentioned are loaded with chemicals. Weleda is one of the best brands around I think. But I would recommend something that is totally natural. Unrefined sesame oil and extra virgin unrefined coconut oil. You may purchase these in the health food store. They cost about $10-15 each. Before each bath or shower I would put a little bit of sesame oil on her skin and massage it in. Then she can take a quick bath. (Be sure you are right there near her, because this can make her very slippery.) Then after the bath you can put the coconut oil on her body. It is totally natural and safe. I do this every day for myself. I tend to get very dry skin in the winter.

I would also suggest to supplement with Omega 3 fish oils (like Nordic Natural or Carlson's)and possibly a good probiotic.

My niece had a patch of dry skin that wouldn't go away. I asked a friend who gives facials what she would use. She recommended a specialty product that her salon uses for eyes and lips - royal honey propolis jelly. The dry skin was gone in a week. The salon is in New York, Yana, on 6th Avenue at Bleeker Street. (I also use it as a lip balm now and it is really good!)

I like Aveno and Eucerin products. I use the Eucerin calming lotion after the bath, and Aveno lavender one for the bath. Both seem to work well.

If you don't mind things that are a bit greasy (and clearly you don't if you're using vaseline), I highly recommend Aquaphor - it's expensive but really works. Alternatively, I LOVE Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Lotion (make sure you get this specific Eucerin product - they have lots of others that did not work for me) -it's unscented, very effective and easy to use (comes in a pump). Have you ever tried Aveeno or even Baby Aveeno. My son is the same age and I've been "greasing" him up 2 x a day since we found out about his eczema. Not too greasy and keeps him soft.

Try aquaphor it really works well. Also Eucerine works well. Do not use baby bath to bathe her, try using either dove soap for sensative skin or cedaphill soap

Put some baby oil after a bath and then pat her dry. My 3 yr old likes this better than lotion b/c it "dries better" than the "sticky" lotion.

Try vedababy- its completely natrural and no preservatives unlike some of teh other products listed- also be sure you are NOt using Tide or All detergents- use Arm and Hammer or Dreft- but vedababy COOL is unbelievable and smells great too- and you only need a very very little amount so it lasts a long time-N

Make sure she is drinking more water/juice. I mix them together. Also make sure she is not spending an hour in the bath EVERYDAY.. That could be what is drying out her skin. Check out your local heathfood store for Weleda products. Very safe for children.

I have to weigh in as an Aveeno girl. Been using the bath products in barely warm water for years. Don't bathe every day in winter and keep it short. Pat dry with a towel - don't rub. A humidifier does help. More reasons to look forward to spring!!!

I noticed that this question was asked back in February - did you ever get a response that worked for your daughter? With it being Spring, I'm sure that a lot of the dryness of skin might be relieved with the higher humidity levels in your house as you depend less and less on your heating system. A humidifier will put moisture into your house during the winter months. For dry skin I would not use vasoline as that is primarily a topical lubricant. Check with your pediatrician and see if Aquaphor by Eucerin could be used on your young daughter. It feels a lot like Vasoline but it is a healing ointment. Hope this helps.

I know this may look like a sales pitch, since I am a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, but I have always used our Extra Emolliant Night Cream. There is nothing like it. We are using it on my 4 month old granddaughter right now for the very same thing you describe.

My 10 month old son has very dry patches on his face due to the cold weather.

Cetaphil cream (comes in a plastic jar at the drug store & at Costco) has helped significantly & doesn't seem to burn when it is applied. Before we go outside, I apply Aquaphor as an extra barrier - it has a Vasoline-like texture, but seems to soothe as well.

Don't use Vasoline, it is a a Petolumn by-product. Try Arbonne's ---ABC Arbonne Baby Care Body Lotion. Their entire line is 100% botanical & safe! It has worked wonders. Try the diaper rash cream too. We just love their products.

Hi - this is N., mother of Naomi - a redheaded 3 1/2 year old, who is very fair and suffers from dry skin and excema. Try Aquafor (sp?) Cream (it's like vaseline). Also try googling California Babies, and they sell Calendula cream (good for excema and dry skin). I probably didn't spell these names correctly, but hopefully you'll be able to find the products anyway! Also, consider bathing every 2 or three days to lessen the drying out. I have to apply lotion to my daughter at least 2x a day at times when it is bad, so don't be afraid to do as much as you can.! Good luck!

Vaseline is probably not the best choice for your daughter's skin as it is petroleum based and doesn't allow the skin to breathe.

Many people like aquaphor, but I like some of the organic or naturally made creams as they are freer from chemicals and harsh agents that are also not so good for the skin. Weleda has a good product line and calendula is great for the skin if you find something (Weleda carries an ointment too)with that ingredient. If you live near a Wholefoods or health food store you are likely to find something more gentle and made for young skin....

There is a very good website called EWG.org which has a ton of information on cosmetics and various products and you could search for information there. They rate toxicity levels and chemical in cosmetics.... Hope this helps.

My doctor always tells me to use Aveeno for any of my baby's skin conditions and it really works! Aveeno Baby is a "miracle cream" as my mom calls it!
