What would be a good series or chapter book for my fifth grader going to sixth grade? Shes pretty advanced so we need a book in that area.

My son is the same way, he reads the series "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney (he is the same guy who played Fonzy on Happy Days). Derek doesn't like to play sports, but loves to read so we go to the library and Border's Books so that he can pick out his own books. It is hard because his reading level is well above grade level. If you want I can ask him what he recommends.

The Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis are really good.
Also, I loved the Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, and anything by Lucy Maud Montgomery (she wrote Anne of Green Gables, I read the whole series).

If she likes action/adventure/etc, what about the Lord of the Rings set? If she is more "feminine" or drama involved, some of Jane Austin's novels? I loved them then and I still do...

My 6th grade step-daughter loves reading! most of the time she's reading the Warriors series - there are tons of books in it and i think that's a big draw (she loves books when they're in a series so there's always more to read!) www.warriorcats.com
She also loves the Harry Potter series, Narnia series, Madeline L'Engle books (the Wrinkle in Time series).
She hasn't read the Lord of the Rings series yet, but we do have them in our personal library and i think they're on her list.
I'm glad noone suggested the Twilight Saga - i personally don't think its appropriate for this age group, but my step-daughter has read the first 2 books so far -- her mom allows her to read things i would have her wait a while to read (but i know, not my place to criticize what her mom allows at her home!).
And i love the suggestions of a lot of the "classic" books - i loved Frances Hodges Burnett books at that age. Her school may have a great list of suggestions too!
Hi- My daughter is in 6th now but last year read everything by Lois Duncan. They are a little scary but she's really into that stuff. Other's she has read and loved recently (sorry I don't know authors)

Something we do to keep both my girls in plenty of reading material is order boxes of used books on Ebay. For about $20-$25 including shipping we get a huge box (often 20-30 books) of age appropriate novels for each child. Just put young adult novels in the search. They read what they want, usually almost all the books and then we sell them on Ebay and buy another box. We also go to the library but I find they read a lot more if there are a bunch of interesting titles on their shelves for a longer period of time. Sometimes it takes a kid a while to warm up to a book, I know my older girl turns up her nose at a particular title and then weeks later ends up loving it, that in itself is a great life lesson. You should be so glad your daughter is a reader, many of my friends preteen kids just don't like it. Enjoy reading!

You don't mention the type of literature she likes to read. My daughters also reads advance literature, she just read the last book of Harry Potter series and did the Accelerated Reader Quiz that kids can take at her school. While other kids have just read them without taking the quizzes, stopped from reading the thick ones or have had low scores on the quizzes, she has had a perfect score in all of them. Sometimes it's not about just read advance literature but about understanding the richness of the words written.

Has she read the Harry Potter books? That's what my 5th grader is reading, as well as the Percy Jackson series and some of the Carl Hiassen books (Hoot, Scat). Dont hesitate to ask your daughter's teacher for recommendations!
My daughter is big into different series of books. She loved the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and has moved onto a new author that writes about vampires (akin to Twilight saga!) I'd suggest a series because that keeps them wanting more. :)

Joan Aiken is an author I loved at that age. She wrote a lot of historcial novels set in England that have an almost Dickens like quality. She is also the daughter of a famous poet so the writing flows beautifully.
_Enchantress from the Stars_ is also a great science fiction book for older children.
If you or your daughter want a recommendation ask the librarian--the one in my emementary school always gave me great recommendations including a long list when I graduated.
Have you tried the Harry Potter books? My cousin's goddaughter is in the 4th grade and has read already 2 of their books!

I loved Anne of Green Gables and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn at that age. Or just google "Newbery Awards" -- it's like the Pulitzer Prize for books for just that age, and every one of them is wonderful.
Fablehaven was fun. It is a series of books so that might help her keep going. It has fairies, brownies and other mystical creatures. My son is currently reading the Percy Jackson series about half-gods/haf-human and their Greek God parents. They were lots of fun. I also loved the Witch of Blackbird Pond. Its in the days of the witch hunt and focus on a young girl who just moved to Salem and befriends an old woman. What kind of books does your daughter like?
The Narnia series. And I also read, and LOVED, The Lord of the Rings at that exact age.
