My 6 year old has body odor. It's coming from her arm pits and is there in the afternoon. She does not have any other signs of puberty onset. I am baffled. We have an appt with the pediatrician on Monday but I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this.

What can I do next?

Hi Michele,

My youngest daughter had a serious problem with BO. She played hard!!! It was so bad we had to resort to using some sort of deodorant.

I was however, reluctant in using this on my child so, I used what I use...a good ole fashioned potato. I am allergic to just about everything. I can't even wear perfumes. When it came time for deodorant it was found I was allergic to that too. My grandmother and her old wives tales told my mom about the potato. IT WORKS!!! And, it doesn't stain your clothes like most products do.

To use simple cut off the top of a potato and remove about one inch of the peel while rounding for underarm use. Rub under arms two to three times, rinse, cover with cellophane and refrigerate. The next day just cut a small portion off the top and reuse.

I did a little research on the potato. Did you know that long ago, before the invention of formaldehyde, funeral director's used potatoes to mask odors?

Hope this helps!!
CM

Yes, this does happen ... I developed body odor at a young age and so has my niece. Interesting that not everyone in the family has the problem. We are controlling the odor with a product I make in my natural product line: Bergamot spray (I make it as a room spray, but it's great as a body spray to control odor and also as a fabric relaxer). The essential oil Bergamot controls the bacteria colonies on the skin that create body odor. It's incredibly effective ... I use it to control my foot, groin and underarm odors and believe that it also helps to minimize sweating. It's the best natural solution that I've found. See more about my products at www.mccluckfarms.com.

Good luck!

Hi Michele - I just wanted to add to those responses that you have received that if it is under arm odor that usually occurs at a later age at puberty, this is something that younger and younger girls seem to be experiencing earlier, and there is some study going on now that some of the "premature puberty" symptoms could be caused by "pseudoestrogens" in personal care products as well as baby care products that are made in the US by many large well-known manufacturers. Please check everything you use on yourself, and family on www.findgreenhere.com (Safe Cosmetics Page, Cosmetic Database link). Kids these days are exposed to many more potential toxins through personal care items than every before, and it is an issue to definitely check into. I wish you and your family well. V. G. :o)

Hi Michele,

Something else to consider is her diet.. Does she drink much water??? many children do not and hence can have an odor. Also, too much dairy in a person's diet can cause you to put off a smell.. it's worth thinking about.

I noticed this about my girls around 7 years. It's usually after sports or playing outside. I got them a natural non-antiperspirant deodorant, like Toms. Kids that age don't need antiperspirant, it's not good for them.

They all are different, my daughter started that at age 8. We started deoderant, "big girl" shampoo, etc. It is just the beginning of growing up. Also watch how her face does, she may need to start a cleansing regimen - I recommend Cetaphil for all skin types.
