My 8 month old is used to a Playtex nurser bottle with the liners and she doesn't have to tip it up to drink from it she can just suck on it and get a drink. I am having trouble getting her to drink from a sippy cup because she can't grasp the concept of tipping it up to get a drink. She just sucks and chews on the spout and gets frustrated when he can't get anything. The only sippy cups she'll take are Nuk and Nuby. Any advice?
She does take a regular cup but only small amounts at a time. I want her to be versatile in her drinking habits so that she doen't get stuck having some type of cluch. At this point I am laying her on the ground when she drinks so that she can drink on her own.

What can I do next?

Greetings ~ We skipped sippy cups (DS thought they were too much like a bottle and he was a BIG BOY and DD had never had a bottle so was confused by the tipping concept) and went straight to cups with straws. We used the take-n-toss cups because they are almost spill proof, easily washed, and if you happen to leave one with a little bit of milk in it under your car seat for a couple days - you can just toss it!

It's not until they are older, that they will "realize" that to get more liquid they must "tip" the sippy cup.

Just keep showing her how. They will get the hang of it.

OR, use a straw cup for her. Some kids like this better, each child being different. You don't HAVE TO use a sippy cup.

Either way, you are not getting her "stuck" in a habit as a "crutch." As they grow up, they will NATURALLY be able to drink from ALL sorts of things. Don't worry. This is just a part of their development. ALL normal. You don't see grade school kids drinking from a sippy cup, right? They drink from all sorts of things. It's all simply a part of "ages and stages." That's all. Don't get hung up on what kind of "spout" they drink from... main thing is they can drink. Then, they will naturally, in their own time, transition to other kinds of spouts to drink from. It's a natural progression. No worries.

I would NOT lay her on her back to drink... this can also trigger ear infections in some children.

Until she is older, yes, you will need to help her drink from the sippy cup. This is normal. Once she gets her motor skills and coordination, and cognitive skills and abstract reasoning, and cause/effect developed more at an older age, then she will be able to do it herself. Each child is different in the pacing of their abilities. It's okay, your baby is normal. This is normal.

All the best,
Susan

i agree with S H to keep showing her to tip the cup. she will catch on. i layed my daughter on the floor and my twin nephews on the floor to teach them. then they started to tip it on thier own because they were used to holding it. give it time.

Hi
My daughter did the same thing. So everytime she was drinking from the cup I would gently tilt the bottom of the cup upwards. After a few times, she got the idea
Good luck

Hi H.:
I've read, that its more benificial to the toddler,to learn to drink from a sippy cup, without the lip sticking out. The projection,is to familar. It makes them believe its to be sucked on.Thats why she gets frustrated, when she sucks and gets nothing. Take a little more time, and teach her how to use a regular sippy cup. You will need to show her how to tilt her head back a bit to drink. Your childs aggravation,is only the result of her confusion as to what to do with the cup. I wish you and your toddler the best.
