help please Mammas....
My son is 2 1/2 and had a small cold which has now been disgnosed as a sinus infection/upper respiratory infection. His ped put him on Amoxicillin for 14 days. He has been on it for 72 hours now and we have NO improvement. I get sinus infections too and know they can take awhile to completely resolve but I always have some relief and improvement after a day or two on antibiotic. DS is now being more listless, just wanting to lay on my or sitters lap. Yesterday afternoon he kept saying "I take nap"...even after a 2 1/2 hr nap. He is only taking a couple bites of a meal and normally eats very well. he is drinking ok still so far. To add to it his cough has gone from rattling to now rattling with production of mucous so thick he keeps gagging on it and "spitting" or "throwing" up!
He has a history of aspiration and pneumonia when he was younger but has been great for 11 months now. So I called his ped back and she is out but the Dr. covering says they can sometimes take a long time to get over and to call back if he isn't better in 2 weeks!!! Not acceptable to me....so I asked for someone else who says that antibiotics will take 5-7 days to show signs of improvement! I have never heard of this have any of you??

What would you do if you knew your baby doesn't feel good and after 3 days is getting no relief from the medicine?

i should add that I also give him 50mg of Mucinex every 4-5 hours, saline and suction nose, steamy shower in the bath room, humidifier and vicks rub on his chest.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great responses!! Sometimes it is just nice to have your feelings validated. Just to update, as I mentioned his pediatrician was out and the resistance was coming from the ped that was covering for her. I called twice that day with the same result, the following day however, when I called his Dr was back and she agreed wholeheartedly that he needed something else and should have probably had it the day before (this is why I love her!!). She called in Augmentum we started Friday night and by Saturday even he was so much better! And now he is doing great, hardly any signs left over.

I am actually in the middle of the same thing with my two year old son. He was diagnosed with a sinus infection and started meds yesterday. My doctor said to call him back Friday morning (tomorrow) if I felt he was not much better and he would prescribe something stronger. He said he didn't want him to go into the weekend getting sicker. Well, the amoxicillin isn't cutting it( it never does) so I will be calling in the morning.

I have never heard of that happening and you might consider a new dr. if they are THAT unhelpful. I hope your sweet boy feels much better soon!

I would take him to a walk in clinic. My oldest was sick and told it was a sinus infection.....after 3 different trips to the dr it turns out to be pneumonia. i wouldnt take the chance that it is something more.

They should switch his antibiotics to something stronger. None of my kids EVER responded to amoxicillan. I've always been told that antibiotics kick in within 24-48 hrs. I usually see improvement within 24 hrs. I would call the doctor back and insist they call in a new prescription.

I would give it a few more days, personally. If your doctor is giving you the runaround, find another office to take your child to, for a 2nd opinion. I wouldn't take your child to the ER for a sinus infection, that's a waste of time & money.

If he is throwing up and gagging that means the medicine is not working, and if the dr is like that not helping I would recommend as someone else on here said to take him to er or find different docotor. usually when on meds for 3 days it should be helping, but it sounds like its not. i would also let the dr's know that he not eating well, and that he has less energy than normally. With the eating part if he drinking okay as long as he getting enough fluids to drink its okay if they not eating, once they get better they will regain their appetite. i f he also has difficulty breathing or having trouble swallowing take him to the er or back to a dr. I hope you find this helpful.

It could take 3-5 days for the med to work or you might need a new antibiotic. I have found that Amoxicillan doesn't work at all. Both my kids started on that and after the 10 days they were not better so they were put on new antibiotics. Loose mucous coughs are good, it means the infection is loosing up. Did the Dr. Prescibe mucinex? Also don't worry about eating, he doesn't feel well. If he's drinking that's fine.
