Hi Kg,
My son and I both have allergies. We take generic over the counter loratadine (from Walgreens it is called Wal-itin). Also take generic Mucinex which is just guafenesin- this one helps thin the mucus secretions so we don't have as much post nasal drip. My son calls it the snot medicine - Gross but funny.
You may find that many of the non-drowsy formulas actually make you a little sleepy at first since you are not used to taking this type of medicine. Steer clear of anything with a cough medicine or benadryl in it - those will put you to sleep. Of course, if you have an allergy attack at night Benadryl is wonderful.
Ask the pharmacist also - they know what will make you sleepy and always, always, read the labels. Get to know which medicines are which and what they do, especially the combo medicines - like the cold relief medicines are a combination of medicines, some of which you may not need. As you try different remedies you may want to keep of journal of how they affected you and when and how much you took.
I agree with post postponing the allergy shots if you have just been diagnosed. I have found that with regular OTC medication that my son and I have can manage our allergies without weekly shots.
Oh, if you have a really bad allergy attack, take a shower and change clothing - sometimes allergens get on your skin and clothes and make you react. This works really well for my son...plus the steam in the shower helps clear your head.
We are allergic to cats and dogs, and grass, and I think air sometimes- all the things we live with on a daily basis. LOL
Good Luck and feel better.
