Single Measles, Mumps and Rubella in Tucson Area

I know that there is going to be one at Udall Park on Saturday and a few other places in the area. I think it was channel 4 that had the schedule for the vaccinatioins.

I would also just call your pediatrition to find out if they do it or call Pima county health department.

I had the same issue, kind of, but decided to just go for this free immunization today. I thought myabe because it was a response to just a measles outbreak, they would automatically have it as JUSt a measles shot. My son's a big 11-month-old, and we went to the Kino campus. It was an MMR, and so far he hasn't reacted at all to it. (It's been about 5 hours) I have to say--this was by far the most pleasant 'doctor' experience I've had here in Tucson! If this ever is offered again, I'll jump at the chance. Hmm, pay the $30 copay and sit with sick kids in an office for an hour past my appointment, or walk right up to the EMT and get the shot? Or worse yet, wait for 5 hours in "Urgent" care for a 5 minute diagnosis? It's such a joke.

This came up for me too - I have a 6mo old, and local docs are recommending the MMR at 6 mos because of the measles outbreak. I called my doc ahead of the appt to ask about a separate measles shot, and he said they can't get it that way anymore. I also talked to someone from the Public Health Dept, and she said they don't have it either (she wasn't especially helpful though).

My son's checkup was this week, and I opted not to get the MMR. My doc wasn't thrilled, but I told him if the outbreak continues, or spreads into my older kids' school district, I'll bring the baby back for the shot.

I also found a great book - The Vaccine Book by Dr Robert Sears - that takes a reasonable approach (in my opinion!) to the vaccine issue. He recommends getting the MMR split up, but I haven't yet figured out where to find it.

i don't think you can find it, and if you did, i doubt they'd give it to you, it would probably be so old you wouldn't want to. the biggest worry with measles is not that it's a very dangerous disease, just that it's EXTREMELY contagious, one of the most contagious, because it can live on surfaces and in the air for a long time. .1% of people who get the disease have had serious complications. (that's one in 1000) the complication that most causes problems with infants is pneumonia. because your baby is young, there's a higher risk for complications with the disease, but because of the hightened awareness, treatment would be given quicker, which lowers the risk. plus, just one shot does not immunize the child, you need 2 doses for optimal immunity, the second shot coming at age 4. the risks of the MMR shot are the highest of all vaccines, with 1 in every 3000 shots causing seizures. but, thank goodness they took out mercury in the shots in the year 2000, so your baby is safer than my oldest was! just some info to help you make an educated decision. all my stats are straight from the cdc.

Chack on the pima county health dept. website (www.pimahealth.org) for vaccinations. They may have the different shot available individually, and with the measles outbreak, they will probably have them free of very cheap.
