Silk Soy Milk

Has anyone heard anything BAD about giving a toddler Silk soy milk? I've been giving my 13 month old Silk since he's allergic to cow's milk. He seems fine on it, but my husband says he heard something on the radio about it being dangerous...not just for toddlers, but for everyone. Should I keep him on his Soy formula just to be safe??

What can I do next?

Apparently the scare has to do with isoflavones in soy.

However, the reason you might want to switch back to the soy formula is because regular soy milk doesn't have much, if any, fat in it. Toddlers need the fat for their brain development.
For this reason, we put our daughter on goat's milk from age 1 to 2, then switched her to regular soy milk (actually, the Silk brand Very Vanilla). With our son, in whom we also suspected a milk allergy, we simply kept him on soy formula until close to his 2nd birthday, then started giving him the same soy milk as his sister.

Hi C.,

No, our pediatrician recommended it since my son is allergic to cow's milk. Not deathly, but still very sensitive and he may grow out of it. I gave him Silk Soy till he was 3 and now he really doesn't do milk at all. We do lots of water and water down any juice we give to him. He does well with any other dairy products that we give him, (yogurt, cheese sticks, mac & cheese)so he is getting enough vitamins that mild does provide, but we as a family are not really big MILK drinkers. I do give him some cow's milk (very little) from time to time and now that he is 4 he does ok, so your baby may grow out of it or maybe not.

Good Luck!

Gladys

It is a very controversial issue. I read up on it years ago and decided it just wasn't worth it. There are alternatives to soy out there (goat's milk, almond milk, rice milk, etc.). You might try a formula like Baby's Only Organic ( I bought it at Market Street)...http://www.naturesone.com/index.php. There's also a great vitamin drink mix for children 13 mos- 5 years. You can mix it with water. The link to it is...http://www.toddlerhealth.net/QnA.shtml. You can buy it on amazon. Here's some of the info on the negatives of soy... http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html. Also, there's a book... http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/whole_soy_story.htm.

If you'd like a sample of the Toddler Health, I can give it to you. My son loves it, but others may not (his friends have tried it, but they're older now). I started him on it at 13 months and he never complained. He still drinks it daily and he's nearly 3.

Hi C.,

Yes, I've heard about the soy scare. But my understanding is that its just if they get too much. In some cases, it gives men larger breasts.

My husband prefers soy because he works early mornings and gets sleepy with regular milk. He was also drinking soy drinks mid-afternoon and sometimes eating a soy protein bar for morning snack. When we heard about the scare, we got details that seemed to indicate a little soy milk is good, as long as you don't overdo it.

So, what we've done is just use soy milk on work mornings and an occasional protein bar. That way you have the benefits of soy without the chance of overdoing it.

Hope this helps.

A.

I have my 18 month old on soy milk. I spoke to his doctor about it after hearing how much estrogen is in soy. He said that soy milk is a very debatable/controversial topic so you will get different opinions. He told me that as long as he was thriving on it then the soy was fine. I am sticking with the Silk Soy for now. I don't think I could afford another year of formula.

My niece has been on soy milk since she was about a year old. She is now 7 years old. She is doing just fine now. She hasn't had any problems. Nothing wrong at all. I have never heard anything wrong with soy milk. But, before taking any advice from the radio, or even me, check with your doctor. He/She will never lie to you. Plus, if soy milk was bad, then why would it even be on the market? Everything that is bad get's recalled, so don't worry. But thank God you at least asked, most people don't even care!
