Just wondering what you did, as I had a similar situation with my daughter. I always heard you should wait 24 hrs. without a fever before taking a child out, and I've used that guideline with each of my children.
My daughter has a cold. Yesterday she had a fever 102. It has broke. Now she just has a runny nose of thick mucus. My question is should I keep her inside today? We were supposed to go to her grandparents and i'm not sure if it's too soon. ( side note, i was soooo looking forward to taking her out for holloween oh well there's next year)
well of course we went to grandma's before i read any responses. She was fine here, even ate!!! Sooooo. monday the cough returned, and temp 100.7 Went to the doctor, she has dual ear infections and a wheeze. And a nasty runny nose. she's on antibiotics and neb treatments. it seeems like forever before this cold resolves itself. thanks for all your responses

Just my two cents...I wouldnt. When my daughter is sick I keep her away from others, unless it was school and thats only with a runny nose. I have had people bring their children around my daughter and it really bothered me because I was afraid my daughter was going to get sick. Be wishes to you and yours
Yes, keep her home until she has recovered from this cold. Make sure she drinks lots of fluids. Lower her dairy intake as this will cause more mucus. And look into an over counter product called "AirBorne".
I do not think your daurghter has H1N1. My daurghter had a blood test and has H1N1 the temp is a lot higher then 102. and will last for days. My daurghers temp is 105.9 and only will come down to 103 with a mix of Tylenol and Motrin. The DR office also gave her a medicine called Tamiflu. I ws told by her DR's that there is a cold going around that has some of the same symptoms as the H1N1. The only way you will know if your daurghter has it is to get a blood test. I hope all works out for you good luck and God Bless
I always went by the 24 hour rule. Fever free 24 hours, as well as any other symptoms. A runny nose does not mean you have to stay in, however I would give her another day to recoup from the fever. My daughter was sick for her first Halloween and never got to wear her costume. I dressed her up and took pictures she didn't know the difference.
Yes keep her in. I know I would not want to be dragged
out if I had a fever the day before.
keep her home until she is fever free for 24 hours. even then my kids were always getting my mom sick just from wet noses and coughs. sometimes not as easy for the older folks to recover.
The rule that they use for school is what i always go by. It is 24 hours with no fever and they can go.
Hope she is feeling all better real soon.
hm. are you going to travel for hours? if yes, then no don't take her out. if no, then sure why not? it's grandparents' house, if something happens use tylenol or motrin just like you would do it at your own house. let her rest, put a movie on etc.
i usually don't take my kids out for at least 24 hrs after fever has broken.
but i have made exceptions.
last week my daughter had a 24 hr bug. 24 hr fever. she got better and she was soo looking fwd to going to school that night as they had things planned. i didn't want to but we had talked about that night for weeks and now i was going to have to tell her no. i asked the school nurse and the teacher and they said if she's up to it why not. we went and she had the greatest time. i don't regret taking her, her fever didn't come back. we're days later now and she's still fine.
as for mucus, put a humidifier in her room if you're spending the night, use saline drops or spray whatever it's called. put two pillows under her head when she sleeps. just like you would do at your own home.
:)
good luck
My general rule is that I keep my daughter home until she has gone at least 24 hours without a fever, and without the use of Tylenol to bring the fever down.
Hi S.,
I would keep her home til she is fever free for at least 24 hours. A cold won't cause a fever of 102, she must have some sort of viral illness. She needs to rest and not expose the grandparents to the illness. A cold typically is without fever, maybe a low grade fever but above 100.4 is no longer a low grade fever.
One of the first lessons I learned was that you learn to become really flexible with celebrating holidays w/all of the illnesses that go around, especially in the winter. Ugh! We have had to cancel b-day parties right up to a few hours prior because of stuff. One year we had a whole Pirates of the Caribbean (spelling?) party we had to reschedule but we lost a ton on the cake and everything because my youngest daughter just had to go and get the croup just to ruin my older daughters party! Then lastyear my youngest ended up w/the chicken pox a few days prior to us flying out to AZ for my dad's wedding that she was supposed to be in! But on the up side of it, you don't want to expose your children to anyone else who may in turn only give it right back! You also gain such a sense of humor about things. The little things don't seem to matter quite as much! Hope she feels better soon:)
I agree with all the others re: waiting for 24hrs after the fever is gone. I just wanted to mention that we used elderberry syrup (1tsp every 3hrs) and it seemed to really help relieve all my daughter's flu symptoms. We could not find the tamiflu that the Dr prescribed so we gave the elderberry a try. You can get it in some grocery stores and pharmacies, natural food stores etc. My Dr said it could not hurt to try it and it worked!
