T.S.
I don't worry about how other people want to spend their money and time, it's their business, not mine :)
Someone told me they realize they need to get a second computer since their child is on Face book so much. Do any of you let Facebook take over your computer so much that you would even think to buy a new one? Ridiculous.

Some parents just don't get it.
I know a mom who complains that all her 6 yr old does is watch TV. She says he turns it on as soon as he wakes up and can sit there all day flipping channels. Yes, we have suggested to her she just simply unplug the TV or take away the remote and she doesn't want to do that. "its his TV, he can do whatever he wants with it" she says. Its as if she doesn't realize she is the parent and can basically make whatever rules she wants.
For homework, yes, I would consider a second computer. For Facebook? Absolutely not.
Err, not so much Facebook but there is five computers in our house and four people. I share with no one! My kids have a laptop and a desktop to use.
Really technology is cheap, why not?
I think now a days a 2 computer household is or should be the norm. Kids are required to do homework on the computer now and if you have more than one child..yikes. To get another computer for facebook or social networking or games etc..is not a reason to spend the money. It also certainly doesn't teach kids the right thing.
I agree. Ridiculous reason.
If it was for FB, hell no, go buy your own computer kiddo.
If it was for school, then yes, I'd buy a new one.
So FB, no, school, yes.
Our 3 kids have their own computer, which is kept in the dining room/living room area. They mainly use it for homework, but also for games and such. Our oldest (13), has a facebook account. For anything other than homework, there is a time limit for the computer of 20 minutes. The kids set the timer when they get on the computer. If they fail to set the timer, they lose computer usage for the day.
My husband and I each have our own computers too. We're a tech family.
My mom limited my time on the computer to like half an hour/day. I would do the same thing. Unless it was something for school. But just playing around, nope. They won't be glued to the computer, tv and other techie type things. They'll have toys and imagination to work with.
When they're legally an adult and have the money, they can choose what to do with their time.
I agree with the majority of the other Mamas....a computer is a legitimate educational tool...in fact it is almost a NECESSITY today...but for FB...hmmmm no.
My 3.5 year old grandson already knows how to access Sesame Street and Wild life videos on his Mom's computer...and I can watch my 18 month old grandson scroll through the apps on his Mom's I Pad...he amuses himself with the kiddie apps in the carseat on trips. Kids are SO tech savvy today...a necessary tool in todays world
BUT...we have to make sure that they are well rounded...they can't just sit in front of the computer or the tv all day long...they need to be physically and mentally active in other ways too. It is the parents job to open up the world to their children...introduce them to discovery centers, museums, the joy of reading, nature...so many many things.
If my children were young, during the computer age ( they weren't...but their children are)...I am sure, by the time they were in the early years of elementary school that they would have a basic computer of their very won.
when my kids were still living at home I finally had to get a 2nd pc, I hated to wait for my turn.
I wouldn't get another computer so that my child could be on facebook. I think most parents let their kids spend entirely too much time on the computer, with their phones, I pods and video games. They get no activity that way OR real interaction with people. Its crazy!
Yeah, I am one of those. Not so much facebook, but my son likes to game, and was using my laptop to do it, so I gave him it - it was 3 years old, and bought a new one for myself.
My 16 yr old has had her laptop about 4 yrs but not just for FB. It is vital for her homework and research.
She does a lot of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
In our family of 3, we each have our own laptop. However, hubby and I run our business on ours.. mine has all the financials, Quickbooks, etc and his has all his data for customers, etc.
We think nothing of have 3 laptops. We are not all 3 on Facebook all the time either.
