Seeking the Advice of Home Schoolers

I am a former teacher turned SAHM. I am interested in using my skills both to assist others and challenge myself. I would welcome the opportunity to present "workshops" to home schooling parents either through home schooling associations or private parties. Because I have not heard of such ventures before, I am uncertain as to how to pursue my objectives. If anyone has any suggestions or knows of possible viable opportunities, please contact me. I am not seeking compensation at this time, simply opportunities inorder to gain experience and establish a process/program. Thank you for your time.

I know many people that home school that I work with selling Usborne books - they specialize in educational resources and learning kits for all levels. Many consultants join just to buy their own books for home schooling - that is how my Supervisor started. You might consider this a s a way to reach out and use your skills to help other homes choolers. Just an idea that has worked for many that I know. My e-mail is ____@____.com and my website is www.ubah.com/P2042.

Hi, T.! I homeschool my two oldest boys, ages 11 and 5. I would definitely welcome some input on how they are progressing. My 11 yr. old is doing 6th grade level work, and my 5 yr. old is doing 1st, though we've taken a break on the actual curriculum and are focusing on learning to read. We just started hsing in August, so I'm new to this, and an evaluation from outside would be beneficial for all of us. You can contact me privately through mamasource, or at ____@____.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
D.

Some Homeschool Groups would let you advertise on their sites and newsgroups. But be sure to ask before doing it.
When you do advertise have a list ready of what you would be willing to do and acceptable philosophies (unschooling, montosouri, traditional curiculum, religious ect..).
You may want to read some homeschooling philosophy books to get an understanding of the types of homeschoolers there are (there are many).
Types of lessons and tutoring;
grade/age range.
Do you want parent involvement or not (I have found parent involvment to be both benificial AND annoying).
Area of Texas you are willing to work in.
You may even set up free lessons/workshop on a weekly or bi weekly basis to get an idea if this is what you want to do.
Most public libraries are accomadating on giving you a little space to teach once or twice a week.
Rates per hour for private tutoring.
And lastly your experience- past jobs and volunteer work that supports what you want to teach or tutor.

Also- Can you teach begining Spanish? Or are willing to do a weekly art project that can go along with a classic story book? I might be able to set something up for you. It's been a while since I have had a group over to do something. It's about time for me to start something up again.

T.,
We recently started a new homeschooling group in Irving called irvingHomeschoolers. They might be able to give you information or let you know what might be of interest to homeschoolers in the area. The website is www.irvinghomeschoolers.com and there is a contact email address there.
Good luck,
B.

Hi T.,

Thats actually a great idea. We just moved from California to Texas. In CA, homeschooling is really big and alot of people do exactly what your thinking about. We haven't joined a group yet. Hoping to do that after the holidays. There is a group that meets in Rockwall/Rowlett and you can contact them through this website... http://www.hearrockwall.org/
Otherwise, I suggest putting an add in the small town papers around you. I'm almost positive you'd get calls. Also, you can call the local churches and ask if they have homeschool groups. Ask for the leaders number, or leave your number with them. I hope this helps out and I think your on to a very good idea. Have a great day! Christa
