So What Happened?

I just wanted to say thank you. After all his testing was finished along w/ soy and milk he also has celiac disease. We went out and purchased a special diet cook book from Barnes and Noble and Evan seems to be doing wonderfully. He is now eating better and is less cranky.

My sister's daughter has a milk allergy. She replaces soy milk in most regular recipes, and said that rice milk should work the same. There are a lot of rice-based products at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, even at my local Hannaford's. Tings and Booty are my son's favorite snacks (like cheetos but no dairy).

Hi Rachel,

I would try Rice Milk. I have a dairy allergy and I nursed my first daughter for 18 months. When she turned one, I started her on rice milk. To this day, she is now 3 1/2 years old and she has never had regular milk. There is also Goats milk you can try. My parents put me on Goats milk because I had a really bad allergy to milk when I was a baby.

Hope that helps. Try the vanilla flavored. They sell it all over. Trader Joes has I think the better price on rice milk. My 3 1/2 year old brings rice milk to preschool and she loves it.

Good luck..
K.

I looked online at Barnes & Noble to see what kind of cookbooks there were out there appropriate for kids.... I found one - It was called Sophie's cookbook (i think- or something along those words). Sometimes if you go to your local health food store - they have cookbooks too.

Rachel- I have a book called the Allergy Self-Help Cookbook. My daughter had some issues with milk and it was very helpful. It has recipes without any of the most common allergens. I think it was about $19 at the book store, but see what the local library has. Good luck!

My son has these allergies and many more. The whole food allergy cookbook is wonderful. Also RICE milk is a great substitute for milk in any recipe. There are also egg-replacer powders if you find out he is allergic to eggs as well.

Shop whole foods and natural sections of grocery stores..there are tons of products out there dedicated to allergy free eating. Also go to allergygrocer.com. A great product line free of common allergens is 'Enjoy Life'

There is also RICERA yogurt that is milk and soy free and contains lots of calcium.

I have lots of advice if you are interested. my son is allergic to milk, soy, eggs, peas, tomatoes, chicken/turkey, beef, lentils, chickpeas, fish and a few fruits...yes, really. He lives on bananas, raisin bran, oatmeal, sunflower butter, pork, pasta and some veggies.

There are very few true soy allergies - your son is probably allergic to something in commercial soy preparations - anything from additives to the alcohol in which it is processed. Many people have tremendous success with Reliv products - there is a special product for children. There are many people whose children have had multiple food allergies - one I know of with 60 allergies! - who have started Reliv slowly and safely with no problem with the soy! Clearing and detoxifying the digestive system will probably clear up the milk allergy as well. Reliv is based on connections - parents talking to parents, and also having access to the science. Reliv is FOOD, not drugs, so everyone can take it. If you would like more info, let me know. GOod luck!

Hi Rachel,

You can also try oat milk (sold at Whole foods). My children loved it. It has all the nutrients of cow milk except the calcium (and of course no cow milk protein). It is great to use in cooking too.

Try this site:

http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/allergy.htm

If you are a coking minded person you shoudl be able to find things to make..otherwise certain stores or online sites can help you.

Traders Joes in Tyngsboro may carry some items, Whole Foods in Andover or Bedford MA can help. Local Health Food stores can be your best bet..they can advise you and also carry cook books.

Do alot of online research and try here for the exact support you need:

http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=dairy+soy+allergy

Finding a group of many other moms going thru the same thing will really help.

Hey there;
My 11.5 month old son has had a milk, soy, egg, peanut and fish allergy since he was three months old and I have been breastfeeding the entire time so I definitely have some good recipes for you. Since I had to change my diet completely in order to keep breastfeeding I know the food is good. Vanilla Rice Dream milk is the way to go with cereals and recipes. The cereals he can eat are Rice Krispies, plain Cheerios and Rice Chex. Buffalo Mozarella cheese is a tasty and safe alternative to any cheese recipe as well as Pecorino Romano and Cran Cru as well as Sheep's Gouda.(Found at Trader Joe's and Costco) These are all goat's and sheep's cheese so there is no allergy issues. Use all three of those for a mac n cheese recipe by Barefoot Contessa (foodnetwork.com). Saute chicken in a pan with garlic powder, sea salt and season all, really yummy. De Cecco is the only pasta brand that doesn't have any soy or dairy in it. Throw some olive oil on it with sea salt and grated Peccorina cran cru cheese and it's yummy. I tend to give my son any fruit or veggie there is. I have learned that he's not going to get "recipes" per say for meals, more of a balanced plate that has one carb one protein and one veggie/fruit. It's a bummer not to be able to make skillet meals and stuff but there are definite wasy to make sure he gets what he needs. Oh, the tomatoe sauce I found that has no dairy or soy is sold At Costco or Stopnshop, is Classico Traditonal Favorites Tomatoe and Basil. Make spaghetti with this or saute chicken and put the sauce over it with any cheese over pasta, it's one o fmy favorites. We also make homemade pizza with it, if you have the time. Hope this helps and good luck. -H.

Hi Rachel,
My son (almost 2 yrs old) is also allergic to milk - I'd be happy to trade recipes and meal ideas. We've been doing this for almost 18months now so we're getting used to it! I'm having a crazy few days as travelling to Europe next week for a few weeks but would be happy to email you when we get there and settled!
In the mean time check out godairyfree.org
Good luck
