I had to choose a hospital based on the NICU also, since I go into premature labor at 26 weeks. I know that finding a good OBGYN is so difficult. I know this because my sister and all my friends have bounced around to different drs with each pregnancy. My friends have been very happy with a midwife and homebirth or birthing centers. My sister still hasn't found someone she likes. I really lucked out. :) I found my DR by accident. My first OBGYN said that I needed a tubal ligation, that my first baby was a miracle and any future pregnancies would end in miscarriage or be born too early to survive.
I made an apt to have a tubal and the Dr was WONDERFUL. She felt that doing a tubal was premature and then I got pregnant and she was so very supportive. She has delivered (c-section) three of my babies. my oldest of the four is only 5 years old. But she is fine with that. She has lots of high risk patients and has delivered via c-section the eighth or ninth baby of some of these ladies. She is friendly and compassionate and I absolutely adore her. She is willing to go the little intervention route or be more proactive, whatever YOU are most comfortable with.
So who is this wonderful Dr? Her name is Dawn Black and she works for OGA. She delivers at the Women's Hospital (more on that hospital below.) She sees patients at the Fannin location as well as at "The Woman's Place" in Clear Lake on Bay Area Blvd and in Angleton. First apt must be in Houston because that's where the ultrasound equipment is. When scheduling your subsequent Clear Lake apts tell them that you are an OB patient with Drs permission to go to Clear Lake office. Schedule several apts at a time because they book FAST. She is one of the most popular OBs in Houston. http://www.obgynassociates.com/black.html
When you are going down fannin and it splits off and you see this big glass building right in front of you with the huge mama baby sculpture in the front, that is their office.
The hospital- The Women's Hospital has been well known for decades. That's where my sister and I were born. They have DVD players and whirlpools in the birthing rooms. (Too bad I have c-setions!) They have a lactation consultant on the floor with the post delivery mamas. They have three NICUS levels 1-3. They have top notch neonatologists (and get this- if your insurance doesn't pay all their bill, they don't bill you! They do what they can to get the most out of the insurance but say that parents of NICU babies have enough to deal with and don't need to hassle with the NICU billings!)
The kitchen is most wonderful- they have menus and you order your food an hour or so before you want to eat. You can order as much as you want pretty much so I order a huge meal and then what I don't eat I share with my family. The fish is WONDERFUL but then all of it is. they even have Star Bucks coffee and Danish pastries.
You can have 'rooming in' if the baby is not in the NICU and YOU decide when you want the baby to go back. I told them I didn't want the baby in the nursery and although they argued that the DR needed to see the baby (this is after the initial checkup) I insisted the DR could come to my room. And he did! And he was nice and didn't mind at all.
The NICU is top notch. They have pumps you can use for free, provide the storage bottles and attachments, and you can pump at the isolette or go downstairs to their comfortable pumping room. They have excellent neonatal nurses. I had two babies in this NICU and spent lots of time there. I was so embarrassed once when I bled all over the NICU floor (i was horrified, really.) But the nurses were fantastic.
I have had a couple of bad nurse techs. Just tell your main nurse that you don't want this person in your room. These people have not much training or experience and while most of them are great there are a few 'bad apples.' Just be firm that person is not allowed in your room and you want a different one. They will switch.
Anyway, feel free to contact me with any questions but I probably covered most of it. :) I qualified for Medicaid last birth but I decided that I would not EVER take Medicaid if I can help it because my DR doesn't take MEdicaid and she is just too good to give up!
