I'm moving to the Portland area in the next couple of weeks for my husbands new job and I'm 5 months pregnant. I am also type 1 diabetic. We're looking to move to the Happy Valley area and I am not too familar with the area (how far hospitals are from HV, what doctors are near the area and what hospitals they are affiliated with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi! Welcome to the area! We use the pediatricians at http://www.wfpeds.com/ and have really liked them. I gave birth to both of my kids at the Willamette Falls Hospital and use the midwives located there as well. Their birthplace is so much nicer than a lot of the hospitals in the area. If you are looking for a birth experience out of the hospital setting, I might suggest that you go to www.tinytalkersportland.com and go to the links section to find alternatives. This is my website and I have tried really hard to make it a good resource for parents in the area. Please let me know if I can help you any further. I once was new to the area too and know how hard it can be!

Hi, I hope you got all settled in. I think that the best, nicest, and most comfortable hospital in Portland is Good Samaritan (Good Sam) on 23rd and Lovejoy in NW. Its about 10-15 miles from HV depending on where you live, but its all freeway, and I drove the same distance from Gresham because it was worth it. Its right off of the Fremont bridge, and my OB compared it to the Hilton when all the other hospitals were like Motel 6. I have to say I agree. I had my daughter there in October and I would never think of going to another hospital unless there was something wrong or dangerous.

If you need specialized care, then all the hospitals and doctors in the area will send you to Emanuel which is a trauma hospital and the home of the Children's Hospital and Children ONLY ER. I loved my OB but I didn't have diabetes so I don't know if he is your guy or not, but he's at Portland OB clinic at Good Sam his name is Dr. Dooley. Actually, Dr. Sang delivered my daughter, and she was great also.

I don't know if you have found anyone yet or not, but I hope this helps and gives you some ideas. If I can help more, please let me know. Happy move!

The closest hospital is Kaiser Sunnyside (just a few minutes from happy valley) and I had all three of my kids there. It was a great experience - they have really nice facillities and all of the doctors/nurses were great. I had the most wonderful ob/gyn. Her name was Rachel Algenio. She is great at what she does and also warm and compassionate. She even cried with me when we thought I might miscarry because of some complications (I didn't :). I also loved the pediatrician I had there, her name was Joan Sage. I no longer have kaiser insurance, but I still have not found any ob/gyns or pediatricians that I Iiked as much and I would go back in a heartbeat. Oh, and welcome to Happy Valley - it is a really nice place to live. I think you'll fall in love with the area.
