hi ladies. I know many of us deal with loss of sleep, but this is really stressing me out more because i am pregnant. I have dealt with insomnia before and if needed, i would take sleeping or anxiety pills for a little while to help me sleep. After a few days or a week, i wouldn't need them anymore. 3 days ago for whatever reason, stress i'm sure, i NEVER went to sleep. I went to work and thought i would loose it. The next nite i took some unisom which is suppossed to be safe while pregnant but i still don't like taking it. I got some sleep. Last nite was up until after 3am even after taking more unisom. Now its after 12 am and i'm soooo tired but unable to fall asleep. Once i'm alseep i'm fine. Has anyone dealt with this? What did you do to get through it? Could it be a phase with my pregnancy? I'm 10 weeks along and have a 17 month old to keep up with. I need my sleep. I want this baby to be healthy and myself too. Any advice? I have tried prayer, reading, breathing relaxation techniques.....stressing doesn't help but it's sooo hard not to worry. Please help and thanks for reading!!

What can I do next?

M.,
I had a terrible time sleeping during my first pregnancy. I went for a whole month with almost no sleep. Don't let this happen to you! Lack of sleep can literally make you crazy. During my second pregnancy I took Ambien, which is safe to take when pregnant. I was able to kick the habit in the hospital after having our baby because I was so tired. :) There are other things you can take, too, if Ambien doesn't work. Call you doctor and he/she doesn't help, email me if you want my doctor's number. Good luck!!

I dealt with this during the early stages of my pregnancy. I wasn't stressed - it was simply hormones. It did go away. And then I was just uncomfortable. lol

My OB prescribed a low dosage of ambien. TV is a sleep crutch for me, and I would go downstairs and watch tv (the mind-numbing stuff - nothing I want to pay close attention to). But getting on the computer while you're wanting to sleep isn't a good idea. It gets your brain waves going, and the light from the monitor doesn't help (yes, same applies with the tv...). :)

Good luck! I feel for you.

I did have that problem during my first and second preg. I did best in my tilt back chair that had a foot rest. I found not laying down all the way helped me the best during those times. I had to have the tv on and my favorite program was Frazier his voice late a night puts me to sleep. I also drank tea (decaf, herbal) I think I craved the heat more then anything but it seemed to help as well. Classical music also helped at times as well a bath not shower helped me at times. I have to try different combinations all the time. I also walked in the evening before i started my bath and some kind of routine to try to get to sleep each night. I think it's mainly hormones, I had never thought to ask for something for sleep didn't know I could get anything.

My niece sprays her bed with lavender has it all around her bedroom she's due in Dec 2009 and says that's what helps her, she also has an air purifier in her bedroom give it much credit (the noise and better air to breath she says helps her right now. Oh, she also has a foot soak machine that vibrates she uses on the bad nights (of not being able to sleep) that helps her also.

I hope you can find something that helps, soon.

Hi M. - I usually do not have trouble falling asleep. I read for a few minutes and this settles me right dowm. However, I do occasionally wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get to sleep. I have found a solution that works 90% of the time for me! I pray! I close my eyes and ask God to watch over those I love and ten go through my list! I don't always get through the list. I am asleep before I am done! Good luck!

I have the same problem and it started as soon as my daughter was born 11 years ago. I tried all everything from herbal remedies to over the counter meds. It's a combination of anxiety from worrying about not sleeping and then laying there waiting to fall asleep. Finally, my doctor had me try Celexa and antianxiety medicine (very small dose) in the morning and Lunesta for sleep at night. It's been working great!!! It really takes a toll on your health and entire life when you can't sleep. I hope you find a doctor that will help you with this.

My sisters cardiologist tells her to take melatonin. Because it's naturally occuring in your body it's very safe to use. You can find it at any grocery store, pharmacy, etc. I don't like the idea of prescription sleeping pills, but knowing melatonin is what puts you to sleep normally without medicine made me feel better about having no side affects.
