Seeking Help with Specific Allergies

I just found out that my son is allergic to milk, oat and almonds. I desperately need ideas for meals, snacks etc. and to consult with the day care he attends. I am so glad that it is a peanut free day care. This is one less thing to worry about. I also want to avoid wheat and soy products. I would appreciate any information on whatever websites or specific products, where to get them etc.

What can I do next?

My daughter is allergic to milk, eggs, and sesame. I have found that it is tough to find snacks that avoid both milk and soy. Since my daughter is so allergic to milk (immediate hives if it even touches her skin), we have loved soy choices-- a lot. I'm glad that your daycare is concerned about allergies. We actually switched her day care because she had a lot of dairy incidents that I felt they didn't take seriously. Fed cheese goldfish, wrong milk in her cereal, grabbing kids milk, etc. For snacks, Crispix type cereal is good because it is corn (I don't think there is oat in it). Authentic tortilla chips (corn, oil, salt). Rice and beans. Kosher hot dogs (no dairy added). You can sub corn tortillas for breads. We eat a lot of Tyson chicken patties (no dairy) and avocados. Avocados are a good choice for healthy fat since toddlers often get fat from milk. TJ's makes soy yogurt that doesn't include any dairy and Earth Balance is a yummy alternative to butter/margarine (but I realize that you are avoiding soy...). Plenty of fruits and veggies. Rice milk. Good luck, and it does get easier now that you know what to avoid. Being prescribed and epi-pen is really scary as a new mom, but knock on wood, my daughter's allergic incidents have only been the few at daycare since she was diagnosed (Benadryl worked to calm the reaction). We have been able to keep her safe now that we know!

you can also only hard pressed oils for fats like olive oil, coconut oil and for milk also try goat's milk products they have the closest DNA chain in their milk to human milk. I make up mini muffins for my kids you make a big batch I do carrot, banana, pumpkin and use olive oil instead of butter or crisco and freeze them pull out a baggie for each day. Good Luck!!

Hi M.,
I too want to highly reccomend Trader Joes! Go in with your list of allergic foods and go the front counter and they will give you tons of suggestions...They have bread there too. Also caputos sells italian bread that was great for toast. My son was diagnosed at 4 months old with milk (off the charts allergic), peanut, soy, and eggs. Rice milk was great! He even drinks it in a sippy. I also would cook with it when I made mashed potatoes or gravy. Trader Joes has tons of snacks also have the BEST lunch meat..no antibiotics no hormones. Trader joes is very reasonalble...I do almost all my shopping there. Just think simple fruits vegtables with olive olive oil, and lean meats. It's actually a blessing in disguise that if forces you to change the way you eat and as he gets older I just changed how we all ate...My son had hives from head to toes and eczema too. What also made a huge diffrence was Juice Plus it's a food supplement for kids called gummies and they capsuls for adults...It is 17 fruits and vegtables that are juiced. We hae been on that for almost 2 years. Wow what a diffrence in my families health. The concentration of fruits and vegtables is how the body heals it's self...something I didn't know. you can get infor at www.TricoiJuicePlus.com My son's eczema is GONE is tollerance for the foods he is allergic has dramaticly improved! Good look....I'll be praying for you.. I know how it stinks not know how to feed you baby. Again think simple and remove the processed foods with 25 ingredients! Think simple- my son love a little lunch meat, avacado or guacamoly (spelled wrong) with corn chips....He is good to go! Broccoli is awesome in pasta, or with dinner GREAT for the calcium.

Hi M.!

My daughter has a rare disease that causes anaphylaxis for unknown reasons- we have figured out several of her triggers though. The bad thing is her allergies change from day to day.... long long story!

Anyhow, we started shopping at Trader Joes. They were EXTREMELY helpful in making shopping for her easier! The first 2 times they actually walked me through the store and helped me read labels and all.

I can not tell you any websites or specific products to get since I am not familiar with your sons allergies but just wanted to put a good word in for TJ's and how they have helped me!

Good luck and many blessings to you and yours!

OH YEAH.... do a search for high histamine foods. You may want to try to follow that as well since those are common ones for allergic reactions.

I shop at health food stores and they are usually really good at showing you what foods you can buy. I'd try Trader Joes or Whole Foods.

My first child was allergic to soy, dairy, nuts, corn, and gluten until he was 18 months old (now just nuts and soy). Because I was nursing him, I had to avoid all that stuff too. Health food stores like Whole Foods and Fruitful Yield have lots of products made with rice. They are a bit expensive, but that was our only choice other than making things from scratch. Trader Joes is good too. Check your library for allergy cookbooks. You can definitely find tons of dairy-free, gluten-free recipes that have no nuts or soy.
