Seeking Dog Training in Lewisville/Flower Mound

Hi Mamas,

My mother gave our family a daschund puppy 3 months ago. My husband and I didn't want a dog seeing how we have 3 children and just moved into new house. However, the kids fell in love with him and became very attached. He really is the cutest thing but 3 months later and he is still using the bathroom all over the house, chewing up stuff, humping the baby, etc... My baby is a very active 14-month old and I don't have the time, energy, or desire to train a puppy.

I got a referral from a neighbor of mine that trains dogs in her home. It is a 16-week program and sounds great. She house trains them, teaches them commands (No, sit, stay, lie down, etc...) and the commands have a lifetime guarantee. The only problem is that it costs $800.

I thought before I forked out that kinda money I would see if anyone knew of a similar type of service so I could compare prices. I really don't want to have to take the dog to a weekly training class that I would have to attend as well because I would have to arrange for childcare, etc... I want an easy way out. I know that sounds a little lazy but since the dog wasn't my idea in the first place.......

Thanks

You may also want to consider Julie and Tom Wheeler with Barkbusters. www.barkbusters.com We used them for some aggressive behavioral issues with a dog. Their program with lifetime guarantee for any training issue was $400. (That was a couple years ago, but I can't imagine the price has since doubled so it would still be cheaper.)

The thing to remember with anyone at all is that you will still need to follow up and work some on your own with the dog. Anyone that claims they can come in and do the job without you having to work at it too is absolutely lying to you.

ok....First things first...you have one of the most stubborn dogs in the world!!! I have two if them, and I love them, but housebreaking was no easy feat.....You need to get the book Dauchshund's for Dummies, it is great!!! He is a puppy so housebreaking can take a while. They are considered puppies for up to 2 years..If you really want him to get everything you need to do all training with him, not send him away b/c the rules will be different at your house and the kids need to be involved too. Daschies don't do well with spanking, they are positive praise dogs. We learned this with the second one. Read the book, crate train, best things we ever did. It made the second one a breeze. If you have more specific questions or problems please feel free to ask, I'll share the best I know. Hang in there it will get better....

I believe you can get that $800 fee down a little if you say you can't afford that...they usually have different levels and at first try and get you to pay top dollar. You can also so a search on the internet for dog trainers in your area.

My best advice for you would be to watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographics Channel. He is amazing and will teach your family how to have a great family dog. I am addicted to the show and I don't even have a dog!

Hope that helps.

I've been looking around for training also and we have decided to go to Petsmart. We start in November. We have a 3 month old golden retriever. While searching for training, I found a site called redeemingdogs.com. He's in Flower Mound. He offers a 2 week board/training program and in home training session. They are more expensive than Petsmart, but maybe it will give you some comparison.
good luck

J.,
I was a cruelty investigator (think Amimal Cops) for over 4 years and a vet tech for 3 so I have come in contact with all kinds of dog trainers. My gut feeling tells me that 800.00 is WAY too much!!!! That is the type of charge that is usally when you have a large dog that is used for protection, security, etc... Another thing is that you should never take someone at their word, as negative as that sounds. Ask her where she did HER training, what her methods are and for several references. I truly believe you can find a more inexpensive trainer than that. The first thing you might try are the classes at Pet Smart. They are no where near as costly. There is one company you should really avoid but I don't want to say the name publicly. I know they have had problems and continue to do so based on having investigated them myself in the past and those that still do. Another thing to remember. Once the formal training ends you will have to continue to reenforce what has been taught. So, you will have to participate to some extent with the trainer to know what to do once you guys are finished. If you want the name of that company email me and I will send it to you in a private message. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi there - we have taken our dogs (a Great Dane and Fila Brasileiro) to Mark Minnerly at the Dallas Dog Trainer (www.dallasdogtrainer.com).

We did the 10-day board and train and have used his lifetime service whenever WE humans need help :) While it is a little on the expensive side, the $800 covers room / board / feeding & training. He offers options, so ask. The dogs love going there when we go away and can't take them with us.

I totally agree with one of the commentaries - don't trust just anyone. If you're not sure, Mark offers a FREE training seminar every Saturday at 2pm and then gives a tour of the facility. Hope this helps and have fun! If you have any questions just send me a pvt note. THANKS.
