My son is on Sinqular also, we tried Zyrtec and didn't really like it at all. The siqular seems to work great for him though.
My son has both eczema and allergies. He's almost 2 and his allergies this summer have been absolutely horrible. We've tried Benadryl, Claritin and most recently were prescribe Zyrtec. After 3 doses of Zyrtec, my son seemed to have stomach pain and nightmares. I've since stopped giving him that. Looking for recommendations regarding allergy medicine and when I should take him to an allergist. (No food allergies thus far have been detected thankfully)

My daughter is on Singulair, its a chewable tablet. Her allergies have improved so much, and I have seen no side effects.
You already know that only a pediatrician can tell you what medicines to try. Doctors have started giving Singulair for childrens allergies, but Im unsure of the age restriction, and what type of allergies your son suffers from. Good luck on that one. As far as the eczema goes, my son had dry patches on his arms and sometimes on his cheeks. They were in circles (not rings) and would come and go but leave marks behind that looked like an uneven suntan. Just before I took him to the doctor to try a prescription (I had already tried everything else) I found Johnsons Naturals (light green bottle). It was amazing...in 3 days his arms/cheeks were soft as could be and he hasn't had a single problem since. I use it on my 6 month old also, as well as myself (great for shaved legs and frequently washed hands!!). It's worth a try...everyone I recommend it to is hooked!
Good luck to your little guy!
Hi K.. I feel for you, eczema can be so frustrating. My son (now 28 mos) started getting eczema around 1 yr old. Of course I assumed he had an allergy because my husband's Mom has many food related and environment related allergies. Around 15 mos we had him tested by the allergist because I really didn't feel comfortable using those prescribed steroid creams everyday (they just tested his blood for a bunch of different things, no prickly's on the back which I was worried about). Turns out he was majorly allergic to dogs. So we got rid of our dog and the eczema has disappeared. So I would definitely have him evaluated by an allergist. Who knows, wouldn't it be great if you could just eliminate the trigger and then hopefully not have to give him any medication at all. Good luck.
Good morning K.,
My daughter also has allergies and eczema. We have been through some ruff times in the past three years but we have a wonderful doctor that has helped us. His name is Harvey Leo he has offices in Canton, Ann Arbor and Novi. I would take your son in for a consultation and see what he says. He has been a lifesaver for us. If you need any other help, please feel free to contact me at ____@____.com

We have dealt with overwhemlming alergies in my oldest son. The excema was horrid. We eneded up doing an elimination diet with him. We cut out all Dairy, eggs, wheat, and nuts For a full month then slowly added things in. He's sensitive to Dairy, and wheat. Since cutting those out most of his other allergies have disappeared.
i have a few friends who kids take singulr and they swear by itand it chew able or quick melt
I would absolutely try an allergist - ask your pediatrician for some recommendations. An allergist would be able to help and give you many suggestions. My oldest son had eczema when he was younger and the only cream that worked was ELIDEL, I believe it is a prescription, my pediatricians office used to have samples, but it worked wonders. We also used arm & hammer free detergent or dreft and Dove soaps -- all helped.
Good luck~
My 2 year old has what my doctor calls the trio Asthma Allergies, and Eczema. She has no known food alleries. Her allegies are way bad this year. She had been taking for her asthma, flovent, albuterol, and for allegies claritin. Her doc added singular 4 days ago, Holy Cow! what an improvement, she is sleeping through the night again! For the Eczema, only use soap if you have to, only bathe of you have to. Lots of Lubridurm, or eucerin lotion. 3-4 times a day.
Hey K.,
Both my sons have bad allergies. They have went to a doctor downriver which is GREAT with kids.My youngest uses singular and has for a very long time we love it. I took my kids to a allergist when they were small one was in 1st grade and the other was 3ish. If you would like the # to this dr. please let me know. I tell everyone about him, but like I said he is downriver. Jennie
Have you tried feeding him locally made honey? It helps strengthen the system against local pollens. I feed my kids peanut butter and honey sandwiches (which they love) made from honey that I buy from the local farmer's market. I make sure that the honey is local (made in Genesee county) and I prefer the raw honey. It takes a little time to see the benefits, but it is a nice natural way of helping out with environmental allergies.
Hello K.,
I would highly suggest getting him seen by an Allergist. I went thru this with my daughter and am currently still going thru issues with her. My best friend has a 2 yr old and has been going thru allergy problems with him also and severe eczema- her pediatrician told her that children can't be tested that young and that she would have to wait until he was four (the same thing that I was told by my pediatrician and I waited - at four when I took her I found out that they can be tested earlier in age and found out that my daughter had a life threatening allergy to Tree nuts and we now carry an epi - pen)...because I had went thru it- I told her to insist on going to an allergist and I referred her to my daughter's in Ypsilanti...she went and found out that he is allergic to peanuts, eggs, and milk- not to mention almost everything outdoors- this was causing his horrible allergies and the severe outbreaks of eczema.. He also now has an epi-pen..
The allergist told me that unfortunately Pediatricians are just simply not informed of the importance of allergy testing and also how early it can be done- he said that it's not their fault, it's just not widely taught and updated. The Allergists can easily assist in medication and changing doses and mixing different ones to make them more effective.
I hope that this helps and that he can get some relief soon! :-)
Good Luck!
Hello K.,
Sounds like you have your hands full. I am not saying this is a miracle cure, but it has worked wonders for my family. We drink this juice that is made from 19 different fruits. They have a special one for kids under the age of 12 that does not have glucosamine and esterified. which works for joints. Children produce this in their bodies, however as we get older we produce less and less. That is why we get so much joint and muscle aches. This juice is taken twice a day and it has basically eliminated our allergy problems. My younger brother is six and he has lived on benedryl all his life. His allergies are under control now. My mom was so relieved. They have a web-site so check it out monavie.com. If you have any further questions I am sure my mom would be glad to answer them for you. This juice has also helped her acne and dry skin problem. It works different for everyone, but it sure is better to give your kids an all natural fruit juice versus medication.
My mom's number is ###-###-#### (Tammee)I am sure she would sell you a bottle of it so you can try it out. After a couple of days you should see a difference. Trust me, it is the best thing I could have ever done. I am 21 and have horrible sinus problems. Life is good now.
I haven't had a problem with my kids but my niece had horrible alergies and eczema from birth. There were times 90% of her body was broke out with eczema. My sister's ped. sent her to an allergist at about 3 monthes after my sister begged. She was given a cream, we can't remember what it was, and had few break outs after that. She is now 10 and only has an occational spot of eczema. She was also given medication for the alergies (cat and dog) when she was very young, but of course we can't remember what that was either :-) So I would say the allergist is a good idea. My sister found that the ped. only wanted to treat the symptoms and didn't seem concerned about the cause where the allergist was concerned about both. Good luck and I hope your son gets relief soon.
Hi K.,
My little guy has been on Zyrtec for approximately 6 mths now and he seems to do well with it. He will be 2 in August and our pediatrician has said that he will send us to an allergist after his second birthday. Good luck....my little guy has been sick almost non-stop since the middle of January this year!

K.,
I don't have any advice on the allergies, but I have been dealing with eczema since the start with my almost two-and-a-half year old. For the best relief, use only Dove soap or Oil of Olay on his skin. (Definitely do not use Ivory or Dial, these are the worst for his skin.) I still use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo for his hair, but have stopped using the baby wash, and replaced it with Oil of Olay. I also would suggest putting lotion on his trouble spots, but be careful with this, also. I've had the best results with Gold Bond Ultimate - Shea Butter. Unfortunately, my mom also has tremendous problems with her eczema, but good for me, she was able to give me advice on what to do and not to do, so I didn't have to try multiple things.
Also, when your son was having his stomach pain, he may have had a virus and it just happened to be a coincidence with giving him the Zyrtec. We changed my 3 month old's formula last week and he became very ill, but it had nothing to do with the formula, he actually had a virus and it just happened to coincide with the formula change.
Good luck!

K. -
I would take him to an allergist before trying any more medications. I don't know if they have pediatric allergists, but if they do, that is who I would start with. If you've already tried the other meds (I didn't realize they even had dosages for under 2) with no sucess, then I would say it's time to call in the experts - that's what you would do for yourself isn't it?
An allergist would know about and have additional treatment methods and medications available to him that you and I don't and your regular doctor might not know about.
(I think my daughter-almost 2 as well- has inherited my allergies -fun, fun! I have been trying to ride it out to see how it goes, but I'm afraid we might have to be making this call as well.)
Good Luck!

My son has had allergies since birth and we've been taking him to an allergist for a few years. I have found that very few allergists deal with young children on a regular basis. I fully reccommend finding a doctor that deals with children frequently. It does make a difference. Message me if you want more information on my child, who's now almost 5, or the name of the doctor.
