our 3 year old son needs to have his adnoids checked at the ENT. Are there any moms out there whose children have been through this "scope" test who can lend some supportive words, or reassurance? I'm quite nervous about this..
Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
This is a simple routine procedure. My daughter used to get ear infections all the time and I had suffered from them as a child as well. We actually had her tonsils and adenoids removed at the age of 4. And can you believe I quickly learned that adenoids can grow back. She had to have them removed a second time. But it eased her problem breathing while she slept and can I tell you that she has not suffered from ear infections in the last 14 years.
Lots of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Do not worry. Your son will be just fine. We as mothers suffer more than they do. Just relax and both of you will get through it. The doctor actually made it a simple procedure for her when she was getting tested. I had gone to a specialist at NY Presbyterian Hosp in NYC.

I cannot say that I have beent hrough it. My son hasan ENT appointment tomorrow b/c our pediatrician who never wants to give out referrals thought he should have his tonsils and adnoids removed. I am nervous also. It is major surgery for tonsils and the recovery time is long. I will keep you posted. Who are you seeing for the ENT? Just curious. My son is also three.

I have been seeing an ENT with my three year old because he has been getting Croup constantly. He did not yet have a scope but did have to go for a sleep study (try getting a three year old to go to sleep with 30 probes stuck to his face, arms and legs - not fun)which was a very long test. The doc told me about the scope and said it only takes minutes.

The removal of tonsils and adnoids is pretty routine and is a very fast surgery. If your child eats and drinks something in the hospital and everything looks good they do not even have to stay overnight. I am actually hoping they remove my sons tonsils and adnoids as he is always so sick and I have been assured by other moms that we will see a huge improvement in his health.

Good luck - try to stay calm for your little one!

Hi S., my daughter had her adnoids and tonsills removed when she was 3. She had the scope done and it is was not a pleasant time. I had to hold her down as the scope was going into her nose and the ENT needs an accurate look. I also had a friend who just went to an ENT on Monday and went through the same thing w/ her 2 year old. The scope is no fun at any age. The only thing i can say, is that it is required, needed but over within 30 seconds. Anything else you may need, let me know.

Hi Steph. We had to have our daughters adnoids checked and removed. My daughter was older but tends to be very afraid of all proceedures. The scope wasn't bad the ENT sprayed a numing agent in the nose and she didn't even feel it. Just a bizarre feeling. Her nose was runny after. The surgury was more about the anticipation and was over in 15 minutes and we are very thankful we did it. She hasn't had the none stop stuffiness which inevitably turned into a sinus infection. I hope this helped and goodluck with your little one.

I actually wanted to respond to the other post which said recovery was long. If the child is in school they have to stay out of recess and gym class for a week and they are out of school for a week but my daughter was going nuts being home and so inactive. The first day home she was given a nasal spray for stuffyness and couldn't blow her nose for a day or so. She really felt great. So even though they say about 2 weeks of no major activity the kids feel really well. I was so scared about the surgury but I have never regreted it. I have a few friends that have had both the tonsils and adnoids out and their kids also did very well. The reason for the inactivity is so the area can heal or else it may start to bleed. Your ENT will definatly answer these questions just make sure to write them down so you can feel comfortable you have asked everything.
