I'm looking for Mom's clubs, book clubs, or volunteer opportunities in the Downers Grove area. I am currently on maternity leave, but will be staying home full time once my leave is over. I'm hoping to find activities that I can do with my daughter (or at least take her along) during the day and/or evening or weekend activities that I could do by myself and let hubby take baby duty. Any help is appreciated.........

What can I do next?

Congratulations on your new career!
There is an organization called PACES which has lots of great activities to do with kids and other parents. There are regions where activities take place. Go to www. pacesmoms.com and check it out.

good luck!

What about joining a bowling league? I live in Tinley Park, and I have been on a Wed morning league now since my 1st son was 4 or 5 months old. At my bowling alley they have a "daycare" room where my boys can play with other kids. They have fun and the caregiver is great! Also it's nice to get out at least one time a week for a couple of hours with some other ladies! Another thing to check out is to see if there is a "my Gym" in your area - we did that too and that was a blast! Also see what your park district offers as far as mommie and me classes!

Hi E. - Check out meetup.com and search for a group called Downers Grove Area Moms. I am a member and there are always lots of activities going on with and without the kids. Membership is free.

How old is your little girl? I have a 2 year old daughter and a 3 month old little girl.

Check out www.meetup.com - I know there's a moms group in Downers Grove, as well as some other local groups that use the site. Best of luck!

Hi E.

For during the day, you could always go to the library in town. They have some wonderful programs for parents and kids.

You could also contact some of the local nursing homes. I would avoid the medical units, but see if you can come visit the other floors, units etc on a regular basis. Many of the folks in nuring homes are there because they can't do it all themselves, they just need a little extra help and they don't have families they can live with. These same folks also don't get a lot of visitors and would LOVE to see you and your family for regular visits.

Another place to look for volunteer opportunities is:

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time off.

I have a friend who goes to church at Clariden Hills Christian Church right near the Jewel that is on 55th street and Rt 83. They have a MOPS group there. I go to a MOPS group at my church in Tinley Park and I love it! Here is the info from their website.

Meeting Dates and Times
MOPS meets at the Christian Church of Clarendon Hills on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of most months Sept.-May from 9:00am-11:00am. Meetings include speakers, snacks, socialization, crafts, and so much more. Moppets, the kids' side of MOPS, cares for your children, ages 0-5, during the meeting. Please call ahead as some months have special times and events and to ensure childcare. Contact Fran @ ###-###-#### or ____@____.com.

If you are OK attending meetings with a Christian theme, you could try joining a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group. They are wonderful. I am Catholic and feel very comfortable at the MOPS meetings that I attend at a local Protestant Church. If interested, go to MOPS.org, type in your zip code, and find a MOPS group near you. Also PACES is a good group to join, too. Go to PACESMOMS.com to get more information.
