Infant Second Baby Shower?

A very good friend of mine is pregnant with her second baby and due in 6 weeks. I really want to do something special for her, but I don't really want to throw a huge shower. Honestly, neither one of us would even be able to do it before the baby comes. I would love some suggestions from any of you mamas out there that have gone through second, third, etc. births. What was most helpful to you? I have offered to watch their first child anytime day or night, but he's not even a year old yet, so I know they're not interested in someone taking him overnight. Thanks ladies! I appreciate any suggestions:)

For all my girlfriends and for myself, we threw a necessities shower. Any gifts given were all things like diapers and wipes, nursing supplies, etc. Then you can either meet at a restaurant or at your home, whatever is easier (I'd go for the restaurant, no cleanup!). Hope this helps.

Hi KJ,
I firmly believe in a shower for every child. A shower is more about celebrating the new life coming than it is about gifts. It doesn't seem right that the first child is the only one that has pictures of their loved ones gathered together to celebrate them before they are born. Have a get together for her. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Like another Mom suggested you can call it a neccesities shower because everyone needs diapers, bottles, binkies, clothes or stuff for Mom like lotions, books, clothes. One activity that I love at showers is to have everyone write a letter to the baby. Get some cute scrapbook paper and have each guest write something short to the baby. Then you can bind all of the letters together and it is a great keepsake for Mom and then for the child later.
Take care,
B.

For our second baby my friends planned a girls night out and we went to a nice restraunt and everyone brought gifts for the baby and me. It was nice because there wasn't any pressure on one specific person to provide all the food or entertainment. And if someone couldn't come there wasn't pressure to buy a gift because it was a "girls night out" not a baby shower.

Personally, I think every baby is a big deal and a shower is nice. Every mom needs and wants things for a new baby, but even more so if the new baby is a different gender from the one she had before. What about a small get-together with a few friends at a restaurant?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to throw your friend a baby shower. I think every baby should have one, not just the first. I wish I would have had one with my second. You could even do it after the baby comes to welcome the new baby. If people don't want to buy gifts, they won't. I found with my second there was still a lot of stuff that I needed and didn't have or had to replace. Even clothes were in the wrong season. She will need diapers and it is nice to have new things for a baby. Maybe you could ask her if there is things she needs, or would like you to do. good luck
