Screaming After His Bath!! Why?

Tonight I gave my son a bath as I do several times a week. Tonight nothing was different, except when I put his lotion on him after his bath he began screaming like crazy!! It's the same lotion I always use. I held him while he screamed, then he would calm down, then screamed again a few minutes later. He continued this for like 15 to 20 minutes, until he finally fell asleep on me. After he was calm I laid him on his changing table and noticed he was a little red on his upper upper thigh, when his legs meet his torso. Can anyone tell me what went wrong tonight, please!! I NEVER want that to happen again!

What can I do next?

Maybe he developed a sensitive area on his skin and the lotion was stinging him. I don't think babies need baths that often. Maybe wait on the next bath and try skipping the lotion?

Sounds like he had an irritated spot, and the lotion stung when it hit that spot.

I would just stop using lotion. It's unnecessary for babies anyway.

well, it's pretty clear that either the lotion irritated him or the skin was already irritated from his diaper and it stung when you put the lotion on.
don't sweat it, mama. just one of the many bumps in the road of learning your baby.
i know we're inundated with ads urging us to use lots of products on our babies but it's just not always necessary. if you're using a mild soap on him and he doesn't have dry skin, maybe forego the lotion altogether. if his skin is a little dry, then use very mild natural lotions (test on a leg or arm first) or even something like coconut oil (which is solid at room temp) or olive oil. just a touch.
but look at it this way! he did a GREAT job of telling you that something was off, and you did a GREAT job of listening to him!
just keep that rolling for the next 20 years.

Any reason you're using lotion? He shouldn't need it. Just make sure he's dry in the creases of his body, especially around the diaper area (which is already super moist), and stop using lotion. If he has a yeast infection, lotion will make it much much worse. Ask the pediatrician about using any lotions or powders on a child - most say "no" due to yeast.

So for now, go for the drying (pat or air dry, no rubbing) and zero additional products. Leave the diaper off him for as long as possible. If you wrap him in a towel, use one for drying and a second one that's not wet as a wrap, and that will keep him covered (and your furniture protected!) until he's totally dried off.

It sounds like chafing, but if it happens again, time to talk to the pediatrician. Lotion on raw skin will hurt.

I have to agree with Diane,-- kids don't usually need lotion unless there's a specific reason. When I was caring for little ones (including my own) I never put soap or bubbles in the bathtub--- not until they were at least 3 or 4 years old. Water is just fine.

Oh, and babies don't need several baths a week. Unless there's a super-messy diaper or another reason, frequent bathing will only dry the skin out. 2-3 times a week max is PLENTY. Use a warm wet washcloth for cleanups if need be.

Unless he has a skin condition, kids don't need lotion. Don't bother with it.

He may be allergic to the lotion. Does he have eczema? If so do not use Johnson's baby bath or lotion. My daughter has eczema and baths used to bother her. I started using Aveeno and we haven't had a problem since. Try switching to a product that is hypoallergenic. Good luck.

Sounds to me - if it's related to his redness on his leg - like it's a reaction of sorts. I would have washed him off if you thought it was related to the lotion. Lotions can burn if they hit irritated skin.

Sometimes kids legs get red from chaffing with diapers etc.

My kids have eczema and have had contact dermatitis at times. It can be painful. If the redness is new - I'm guessing just an irritation. Just avoid putting lotion directly on it. If it continues, mention it to your doctor. Good luck :)

We use to do bath time every day when our son was little.
I used baby wash for a long time - it was very gentle on his skin.
Then I'd wrap him up in a big beach towel to dry him off, then diaper and pajamas.
I never used any lotion on him.

Instead of lotion, use a little tiny bit of coconut oil if his skin is dry.

It does sound like the lotion hit that irritated spot, so yeah, avoid doing that in the future. Don't stress about it, it happens to all of us. When my oldest was a baby and had a cold, I had just learned about eucalyptus steams (Holding your head over a bowl of hot water with eucalyptus leaves in it and breathing in the steam to clear your sinuses). I had the *great* idea of throwing some leaves into my son's bath water. NOT a great idea - his skin was so red and irritated after 5 minutes, I had won that day's "Idiot Mother Award".

And to answer Tashia's question, neither I nor my daughter can bathe every day. Our skin is too sensitive. I'm a redhead and she has eczema - soap and water every day (unless we've been playing in the mud or something) just makes our skin red and irritated. My boys also had pretty sensitive skin when they were babies, and they would often bathe without soap. Soaking in a warm bath was plenty.

How old is he?
He does not need a bath daily.
My pedi told me not to bathe my now 21 yr old daily. They don't need the lotions.

Sounds like the lotion was creating a stinging sensation on dry skin. Stop using it daily and stop bathing daily.

Of course, with any concerns you have, check with your Dr.

Did the lotion have a steroid in it? Steroids burn the skin a bit so if he had any sort of blemish or open spot it probably hurt. My son had horrible eczema and if this every happened, and it did, I just washed it off immediately and then put on some aquaphor or neosporin first. That will help block the open part of the skin and still allow the other cream to work.

It seems pretty simple to me. Throw out the lotion, or use it on yourself. It's obvious that the lotion hurt him.

Sometimes we don't know why something is okay for a while, and then not okay. But we learn and we change things up. Don't use this lotion anymore.
