I bought Crayola, because it was a name I trusted.
Wait until they have sales and pick up the items and extras on sale!
I need to buy pencils and markers for 1st grade. which one is better... Craz-art or crayola? Thanks

Crayola.
Seriously, I am not opposed to buying the generic brand of a lot of things, but Crayola is just absolutely superior to any of the other brands.
ETA - Just read the other answers ... The Crayola Washable Markers really are washable, and they are very good markers. If you need colored pencils, definitely crayola with the erasers. They are a bit more expensive than and other colored pencil, but they actually do erase! That was never true of any colored pencil when I was in school.
Crayola washable.
Art teacher here...pay the money for Crayola....everyone at school will thank you including your kids!!
i prefer crayola markers, the washable ones actually wash off and out of clothing. the crazy art ones tend to stain even when labeled washable.
for the pencils, i don't reaaly think it matters, my son will break them no matter what brand they are!
I'm assuming the school doesn't specify any particular brand?
I would get which ever is the least expensive (what ever has the best sale deal).
What every they ask for - get double.
Round about Christmas (and maybe Spring Break, too) what ever you got for Sept will be running out - and you'll be prepared to send in the extras you got at the back to school sale during the summer.
Pens and markers you have to be careful how much you get because they do dry out eventually - they don't have a long shelf life like pencils and crayons have.
The choices available when we were getting this stuff were Crayola and RoseArt - and they were both fine.
I only buy Crayola Washable for school and home.
I only buy Crayola - I'm not sure why, but it is what it is. In the grand scheme of things, crayons aren't expensive.
ETA: I was in Walmart yesterday afternoon and went by the seasonal counters in the front of the store and found that they were in the process of putting out school supplies. There were Crayola crayons (24) for like 25 or 50 cents a piece. They also had the colored pencils out. So do check them out.
Original: For future reference, at the end of the school year, Walmart has a bin or two of school supplies. Sometimes they will put out supplies early in July as a starter and the prices are less than at the regular buying time. That is when I usually pick up items for the home. If I don't get Crayola, I do buy Rose-Art.
There is always the dollar stores for supplies. I picked up an unknown name brand of markers the other day for work they were neon colors.
Welcome to the school world.
the other S.
Our school always requested Crayola because they were good quality, easy to find and then everyone had the same.
definitely a case of you get what you pay for - Crayola is so much better. lasts longer, better color saturation, better coverage, not as easily broken or ruined. pay the tiny bit more and go with crayola
Our school actually requested Crayola washables (I don't find them smelly) so that's what we have gone with. They last quite well.
My grandchild's school specified the Crayola brand, in part because they mixed all the crayons together to form a box of crayons used by everyone.
I also buy only Crayola now that the washable ones are good.
My daughters school doesn't want the kids to have Craz-art so it's Crayola. They do like the retractable crayons.
I buy whatever brand they have at the dollar store. They are fine.
I also prefer Crayola. They do last longer, especially since first graders, and 2nd graders, do tend to leave the covers off for quite a while. I always buy several boxes of them when they go on sale at the beginning of school shopping season. Later on, they cost 3 times what they are now. Same with crayons, colored pencils and notebooks.
