Scholarship Question

Talk to the Financial Aid counselor. They are there to H. you apply for aid.

If at all possible, steer away from student loans. Think about the debt you'll have when you graduate... it adds up fast.

Apply for any scholarship you are remotely qualified for. Also, not to be mean, but make sure you use spell check and use proper grammar when submitting applications.. it goes a long way if you have things correct. If you don't, then the reviewer will think you were slopping you application together and don't really care.

Besides scholarships, be sure to check your benefits with your employer. There may be a tuition reimbursement program as part of your benefits, as long as you earn a minimal grade and up to a certain number of hours or dollars. That's a great way to H. pay for college.

Meet with someone in your school's financial aid office, they will have all the most current and relevant information. Try NOT to resort to student loans/school payment plans, they take FOREVER to pay off and in some cases the interest rates are really high (especially private/professional schools that offer loans.) many schools have scholarship finder type thing. I'd talk to an adviser/counselor to see what they know about and can recommend.

I would talk to your schools Financial Aide Office. They usually know about lots of scholarships that would be available to you. Also, talk to the department you plan to major in. They get information all the time on scholarships. Don't be afraid to just apply for anything. You never know!

Check out American Association of University Women (AAUW). This organization's mission is to H. women get an education. There are many scholarships and fellowships, some aimed at women going back to school. There are also scholarships targeted toward specific areas of study. Under learn - check out the fellowships and grants as well as scholarships.

Good for you for getting abck into school! I started back up again after a few years, too.

What is your race/ethnicity? There are a lot of scholarships out there that are based soley on being in a minority racial class (Especially hispanic or native american).

Check out Fastweb.com - they can match you with a nationwide database of scholarships bsed on your demographic variables and your area of study.

Also, look into your school's financial aid info online. You may qualify for a transfer or non-tradidtion student scholarship since you are returning to school instead of starting as a traditional student from high school.

I also attend a private university and currently use a combination of the Pell, a transfer scholarship from my school, and a department scholarship for my field of stufy and I have not had to open a student loan yet.

Meet not only with the financial aid office, but the department for your degree. My SD is getting a scholarship from the department even though she missed a cut off for the school itself. Sometimes you can also qualify due to things like family income, the fact that you are a single parent, being a non-traditional student....look around and ask around.
