Has anyone had a amnio test done and have the result"s come back positive for a chromosome defect and then turn out not true when the baby is born? I just got the call from my doctor telling me that there is something not right with the test that it came back with a chromosome defect but they want to do more testing to see what the outcome is!

What can I do next?

I don't remember test names but my daughter's first test showed some sort of defect but the second test cleared it. I remember being told that the first test is often a false positive and that is why they do the second one.

I love that doctors offices call on a friday afternoon and leave messages. So that when you try to call back they are closed and you can worry about it all night. I had an amnio with my middle son. They left a message saying the doctor was concerned about the results and I needed to call the office and make an appointment to come in and discuss "options" really. options it was a baby not a car. Turned out the test was wrong. Breath in and out and try to stay calm. I am saying prayers. Hope it turns out well.

I never had an amnio. My limited understanding is that they are pretty accurate. BUT, they would have to look further because they can't just test for everything under the sun. At this point, pray and keep in mind that not all defects are as serious as others and it's better to think positive and not negative. Praying for you right now.

What more testing can they do?
Another Amnio???
Did they send you to a Genetic Counselor?

I had the Amnio with both my kids.
The Amnio... is the most accurate.
Still not an absolute 100%.
But accurate.

Try not to worry, until you talk to your Doc and see what further testing there is.

Hi - There are other chomosomal defects besides Down Syndrome. Some more severe, some less. I had an abnormality on the AFP test and was sent for genetic counseling and an amnio. The doctors originally thought it was something called Trisomy 18 which is devastating. However, the diagnosis turned out to be Turner Syndrome, which can have some complications, but normal life span, normal intelligence. For me, I would rather know what is going on during my pregnancy, than not know.

This exact thing happened to one of my best friends when she was pregnant with her first baby. She has a perfectly healthy, normal, beautiful son now, so try not to worry!! Stress isn't good for you or the baby. Bet everything is totally fine :)

Friends of our's had gone thru the amnio testing & were devastated to find out that their daughter was going to be born w/Down Syndrome. Guess what, the test was incorrect. They went all that time worrying about things, stressing out over the preparation of things but the one thing that was perfect was their daughter's name they chose Amanda Faith. My heart goes out to you and please keep us posted with your results.

Hello, I have heard that there are many false positives in these tests. i can also say that I have a beautiful 3 year old granddaughter who is the love of many lives. She has Down Syndrome and is very pretty, smart and comical as well as being so very lovable. She has her naughty times and I reallly don't see her as any different than any of my other grandchildren as far as how I love her. She is a little delayed with her speech, but can keep up with other children her age on many other things. I wouldn't trade her for any other child in the world. Although, I would love for her to not have this cross to bear, we all have something. By the way, my daughter did not have the amnio test done. There were indications that her daughter would have Down Syndrome, but she knew that she loved her and would accept her with whatever came. We all just celebrate her wonderful life as we do all of our grandchildren.
Good luck with your precious little baby.

I had one friend whose first test came out with possible chromosome defect, but the subsequent test was fine. The child was born beautifully healthy and is now on a full scholarship at college.

Do further testing and remain hopeful.

I never had an amnio and this is why.
So I find out the baby has Down's or something else what do I do? I worry my whole pregnany and get myself stressed out which is no good for the baby. So not knowing was great, then when they come without issues, it is a blessing.

A Down's Syndome child brings a smile to my face. Every person I have met with Down's is so loving and kind and just happy. I have no clue about Down's or any other abnormalities they would be able to find in utero though.

Good luck to you and try not to stress too much. Take care of you and the baby.
