To save money, we cut off our DirecTV .... what does everyone do for TV that doesn't have cable or an antenna or satellite?? We aren't SUPER big TV watchers, but do like to watch TV to settle down every night and to watch every now and then ..... we bought an antennae from Wal-Mart to put in our attic, but it didn't get but like 5 channels and only 2 were clear.
So my question is: what do you do for TV? And if you pay, what do you pay??

My friend just told me that they got a couple cables from best buy that hooks their computer & tv together so they can watch shows from the internet directly on their big screen tv for free. So I think the total for their cables was about $40. Hulu & fancastic are the websites they use. I also heard something about google tv coming out soon, but don't know details.

We do have cable but my husband and I have often talked about just using our computer to watch TV if we ever got to the point in our budget where cable had to go. Most shows can be viewed online. You can even hook your PC up to your TV to view it on a larger screen. And of course you can leave a DVD player hooked up to the TV for watching movies.

Good luck,
K.

I am going against the grain on this one.....no TV? Anntenae's are not going to work :( I would work a second job for TV....thats just me. If you rent at a dollar spot, factor in drive time, inconvience, and time deciding....
Get DiercTV....negotiate the price for basic....and for goodness sake, DONT GET RID OF TV!!!!!

You have to have a converter box to get more channels. My mom gets the basic stuff plus a few new channels since it is digital now--no cable or satellite.

I think since it is all digital now we just get the basic stations with the converter box. I never really watch tv so we just get movies from the library or watch some we own. Your reception sounds pretty standard to me. I grew up with about 2 or 3 clearish stations and we're used to only having a couple clear ones now. I have no idea for rates, but you could call a few local companies and see if they have any deals. Sometimes bundled services are a good deal if you are already paying for everything separately.

1) Streaming from _______ to the TV
(It essentially turns your TV into a big computer screen):
- Netflix (via your computer or xbox or wii)
- Hulu
- Station Websites

2) DVD's

I can't abide cable anymore. I don't want acres of junky commercials, and I don't want to have to be tied down to whenever the network thinks I want to watch something. Streaming & DVD's I can watch what I want, whenever I want with at MOST 5 commercials per 1 hour, and most of the stuff I watch is commercial free. $20 for netflix, everything else (hulu and all the network stations) are free.

If you have an Xbox & internet connection, you can watch movies/Netflix on it. Via the Xbox, you can "stream" movies to it and watch it via Netflix. That is what we do too.
Its fun.. .and they have all the tv show series as well as movies too.

Or just use your tv to watch movies or videos.

Or, watch TV shows/movies on your computer. That is what many people do.

good luck,
Susan

hi-
my husband and I have refused to buy cable for the past 15 years. that being said the "digital TV" that the US switched to sinks! We have been very close to giving in to cable. the closest we have gotten to a decent picture is buying an antenna we installed on the roof and a converter box. with that antenna we can get 16 stations - 3 that are weather stations and 10 that repeat the same show 10x in one day. even with that we don't always get a clear picture. there will be times when we are watching a program and the picture "goes out" last 3 minutes of the show! Ugh!

In order to find out where to place the antenna check out: http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx

we went to this site to look at the direction for the antenna but we still don’t get perfect reception :( Sometimes if reception goes out we watch the end of the program on the internet - http://www.hulu.com/

I look forward to seeing if anyone has any other suggestions Good luck!!

We have cable, but we don't use it that much. We ususally rent a redbox movie if we do family movie night, or we hook up our laptop to out TV and download movies from the internet.

We just have an antennae that hooks to our TV. I have adjust it every once in awhile, but it works really well. Of course, I live in the country so there's no tall buildings or anything to obstruct my reception. I watch a lot of my old cable favorites online. With an antenna you're only going to get the local channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and usually PBS..at least that's what we get.)

We watched movies instead. Our children had more time for music, homework, playing with friends, etc. Each one of them has thanked us for not having TV in the house at some point when they were older. Go figure!

We just got cable again after 17 years of no TV-viewing. I find the commercials offensive and the overall quality of TV poor. Having said that, there are a few shows worth watching.

I know alot of people strem TV from their computer from hulu.com. I've never done it, but lots of TV shows on the internet for free. Also, nexflix is a good idea (done that) because you can stream movies to computer or gaming console, plus keep DVDs out as long as you want and no late fees or anything.
