San Francisco Unified School District: Have You Waited for the 10 Day?

I spent 4 hours at the placement office today. I did not receive a single school on my list. I am currently on a waiting list for my choice school. There are 4 people ahead of me on the list. All in all that's better odds than several other schools. There are ZERO openings at any schools that I requested, or that I am interested in for my daughter. My question is for parents that have been through this before. Did you wait it out for the 10 day count? Did you accept a position at an alternate school and transfer? I currently have NO school assignment for my daughter for the fall, and I am starting to feel very anxious. The placement center assured me that there will be a lot of movement over the summer. I'm really torn. I am hoping that someone whose been through this before can attest to the fact that more openings do happen at the 10 count. I also want the truth from anyone who might have waited and then didn't get any school at all.

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded with reassurances. I don't feel that homeschooling would be optimal for my daughter. I am going to wait it out. I am also keeping a close eye on the number of people on the waitlist. I'm considering switching to a school with a smaller waitlist. I'm also going to talk to the Principal to see if he has any insight on families that might be moving. Mostly I'm keeping my fingers crossed and trying to stay positive.

You should post to the Parents for Public Schools Yahoo! Group <____@____.com>,and/or the SF Schools Yahoo! Group <____@____.com> for more information.

There is a lot of movement, already. Just yesterday I learned of a family moving to Connecticut that will be giving up a space for next year's K at my younger son's school. And we had at least two incoming K families make other choices and inform us to remove them from the list before that. Hang in there.

Hi J.,

I have two children who are in public school, my oldest has had nothing but trouble getting into the school of our choice.
Both times I have appealed and received a reply in June (elementary) and in September (middle school). For a while my son was unassigned, we ended up sending him to a private school in a K-8 school for middle school. It's one of the cheaper schools and he received a wonderful education. Perhaps you can send your child there for a year and try again next year?

The 10 day count is nerve racking but a gamble.
It really depends on the school you are waiting for, all the private schools have asked for their money up front so there shouldn't be any movement there. Usually the secretary or the principle knows what is going on (some parents who have not replied or may be moving soon, but registered their child anyway). If you know an active parent in that school, you may get the inside low down from them.
Good luck, it's by far the ugly side of SF school process. I know there will be movement in the school board soon, you should voice your disgust! I am!

Best of luck, I really do feel your pain

Hi J.,

I dealt with them last year, and it worked out fine. We didn't have to wait for the 10 days before we were advised of 3 openings. I would not worry.
