Safe Hair Color

Hello ladies I have been coloring my hair for years and years now; I started turning grey at a very young age. Lately I've had problems with my scalp being extremely dry and sensitive and am afraid to color my hair but truly want to because I just don't like the grey. Is there a safe for sensitive scalp hair color that I can do myself out there? I have always done my own hair because I just can't see paying a professional when I feel it lasts about the same amount of time. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi L.-

Have you tried one the natural haircolors you can buy at Whole Foods? They are the same price as the Clairol or Loreal colors at Target. They are just missing the chemicals which are probably causing sensitivity to your scalp. I have the same exact problem (premature grey and sensitive skin). I deal with it but have considered switching. It's not my scalp that bothers me but rather the skin surrounding my neck and ears which get red and bumpy.

Good luck!

Redken Shades EQ is my all time favorite. It's a semi permanent so there is almost no amonia and makes your hair super healthy, the trick for the sensitive scalp though is adding a little packet of equal or sweet n low to the color and you will feel no irritation on your scalp, I'm not sure how or why it works but it works everytime, we use this method all the time in our salon.

I agree with Henna as well, but you really have to use products that will help heal your scalp and use a very mild shampoo that won't strip your hair or cause it to get dry (probably has fragrance or alcohol) that can be irritating your scalp. It's not going to get better until you let it heal and become healthy again. I know of a great shampoo and a great scalp retivalizer if you wish to try it. I have been coloring my hair for years as well but we do need to be careful with what we put on it. The over the counter products are harsher than we think and while you and I will continue to color our hair, you need to choose safer options. Here's to no grey!

Use Henna - its natural safe and can be used in pregnancy. Only caveat it gives shades from golden brown to black.
