Resources to Assist New Single Mom with Kids

We are seeking an upbeat individual with daytime availability (7am-4pm) Monday thru Sunday for a part-time Café Attendant. The Attendant will be responsible for, but not limited to: Sandwich Preparation, Brewing Coffee, Preparing Coffee Drinks, Merchandise Sales, Maintaining a Clean Working Environment, Providing Excellent Customer Service.

The Requirements for this position are: at least 21 years of age, Upbeat/Outgoing personality, Ability to work in a team atmosphere, maintain a calm demeanor under pressure. Email is required. Fluency in English Language communication skills are a must.

It's a wonderful program to help single moms in any way that is needed.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of resources you are looking for, but here is some various resources that are free. Parents As Teachers is a great resource, they come to your home and help to evaluate your children's development, give you advice and support in dealing with issues at home, and show you fun and frugal activities you can do with your kids around the house, and all the educators seem to be VERY, VERY nice and supportive. Parents As Teachers also conduct various activities throughout the year like storytimes or educational (infant massage, grandparents and kids, etc) and fun activities at libraries or community centers. Just call the administrative or early education office at whatever school district you are in. The Ferg-Flo School District also has a couple of weekly programs during the school year. LINK is one, you can go Thursdays or Fridays, your children play in one room (I think ages 0-5 are welcome, under twos go in one room, over twos in another) and you can listen to a speaker on various parenting topics (language development, temper tantrums, nutrition, etc). Every now and then LINK does a field trip and it is about $5/child, but the regular sessions are free and a great way to meet other moms. Ferg-Flo also has a Time for Twos program for two-year-olds and their parents, but this one does cost. They also have free preschool I believe for 3 and 4 year-olds. The Jamestown Library branch (just past New Halls Ferry if going North on Lindbergh, up on the hill to the left) has an EXCELLENT storytime on Tuesday mornings (I also think they do it Tuesday afternoons and the first Thursday evening of the month), they read stories, sing songs, watch a video and do a craft. Also a good way to meet other moms. I hear a lot a good things about the MOPS group the other woman mentioned. Florissant also has a Moms Club, but I can't remember if they require dues? Depending on your income and number of children (I think it's about $38,000 for a family of four), WIC can provide help with food such as milk, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, beans, etc. There is a phone number in the phone book for the St. Louis County WIC office, you would start by calling them. They also have a web page where you can look up income requirements and the documentation necessary for assistance (I don't know what it is off the top of my head, but you can probably google St. Louis County WIC). Also in North County there are a lot of fun parks, including Musick Park, off of Hanley on Latty (between Frost and 270), that has a great set of fountains for the kids to play in, they are turned on and off by a button on a blue pole at the edge of the waterpad. A couple of the other responses also reminded me that the First Baptist Church in Ferguson has some kind of program to help single moms with car maintenance, I can't remember what it is called, but if you call them they should be able to help. A couple of the churches around in Florissant also run thrift stores one day a week or once a month, I usually see them listed in the North County Journal. Salvation Army on Dunn Road by Schnucks and Old Time Pottery has GREAT prices on kids clothes and shoes and has a lot of clothes in good or new shape.
Not in North County but other free activities also include, the Zoo, the Art Museum, the History Museum, the MO Botanical Gardens on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from open - noon (and the Children's Garden there is free Tuesday mornings, but you have to pay to get into the park), the Magic House is free on Wednesday evenings after 5:30 until August 20 and then they have one Friday evening per month free the rest of the year (you would have to call or maybe visit their website to see which Fridays are the free ones). A couple of specific resources in North County that may or may not fit your life, are a Breastfeeding Support Group that meets every Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm at the Kids Again store on Lindbergh between Washington and St. Denis, La Leche League of North County (great resource for breastfeeding and parenting topics like nutrition, discipline, etc.) that meets at the same store on the second Monday of the month at 7:30 pm (there is also usually a second enrichment meeting-off the specific topic of breastfeeding and onto something else like frugal living, babywearing, cloth diapering, etc-on the fourth Monday night of the month at 7:30 pm at someone's home). On the second Thursday of the month, 3 adoptive families (including mine) have started an Adoption Support Group called Forever Families for people who have adopted or are planning to. We meet at 3:30 pm, but will probably be changing to an evening meeting time soon to try to include more families, check the website for time changes at http://www.foreverfamilies-stl.com/
Those are all the resources I can think of off the top of my head. So many of them are great for meeting other moms which is the best way to find out about resources and get support from friends and other moms who have been or are where you are in your life right now! I am now going to clean the banana out of my rug that was apparently keeping my kids occupied while I typed...you gotta' love two-year-olds, they can always find something to keep themselves busy :) :) !!!!

I am a custodian at First Christian Church of Florissant, on Patterson. We have a MOPS (Mothers of preschoolers) program that meets once a month during the school year. They also have other activities sometimes, and they all include child care for the kids. Moms get together and discuss 'mommy things'. make a craft, or listen to a guest speaker. While the moms are busy, the kids have others (usually older moms, grandmas, and grandpas) caring for them in the children's area. They have one for daytime and one in the evenings for working moms. If you call the church office, they could put you in touch with the leaders to get more information. :o)
