Residue in Glass Bottles

Hi Moms,

I'm having a problem getting our glass Dr. Brown's bottles clean. I empty and rinse them right away, and if I can't get them into the diswasher immediately (which I usually can't!) I fill them with clean water to soak until I can load them in. After they come out of the dishwasher, they sometimes have some kind of residue on them that looks sort of like orange juice pulp. I can usually soak them, scrub them with a bottle brush, and they'll come back clean after another run through the dishwasher again. Now that's not working. The stuff really seems to be stuck! Our other glasses don't have the residue on them, just the baby bottles. Our dishwasher is less than 4 years old and I'm using Cascade Complete detergent with Jet Dry. I also rinse our dishes pretty thoroughly before I put them in the dishwasher. Any ideas on what this residue might be and how to get rid of it? Thanks!

Edited to add: Thanks for the responses so far! I know that at 11 months old a baby ordinarily would be weaning off the bottles anyway, but (1) our daughter was a preemie so she's developmentally delayed in some areas and will be on the bottle for another couple of months, and (2) I'd like the bottles to be spotless since I'm going to put them on craigslist when we're all done with them!

What can I do next?

We also have the problem with Dr. Brown bottles and we have tried everything you have mentioned. The only thing that works for us is to pour in boiling hot water and let that sit in the bottle overnight and then repeat this in the morning. We then put it in the dishwasher for an additional clean.

Hope this helps.

I have that happen to our regular glasses sometimes. There's this stuff out on the market that cleans the dishwasher. You put it into an empty dishwasher in the silverware holder and run it on the hottest water possible. It gets out all of the lyme, food or whatever may be stuck in the sprays and drains. A run through if this stuff gets the dishwasher really clean. You do it every 30 cycles and it keeps going like new. It's about $3 a bottle and is available pretty much everywhere.
Hope this helps.

we had issues with our dishwasher & had to replace it. Our glasses were always dirty & our dishwasher was only 4 years old as well. It's worth replacing rather than having to rewash.

Hand wash them I've never liked the way bottles glass or plastic come out in the dishwasher if she's 11 months old she should be starting to use a sippy cup more and more and the bottles less and less.

I have the same bottles with an 11 month old girl and no residue, but I hand wash them (no dishwasher). I'm assuming it's something with your dishwasher or your water. Try handwashing them in hot soapy water and air drying them just to eliminate the water as a factor. Investigate doing a round of cleaning in your dishwasher. good luck!

Boil them in clean water after hand washing them. That's what our moms did with glass bottles- and it works!

Hi M.,

Rachel's advice sounds excellent.

I figured that since dishwashers washed dishes, they'd wash themselves too. It's a good thing you rinse your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. I hadn't and discovered that a lot gets stuck out of sight to the side of the wall below the dishwaher door. YUCK! I discovered a product that is to be used to disinfect the dishwasher. It doesn't get rid of all of the sticky mess, so I've had to pull the rack out and scrape away at that disgusting mess. Use gloves if you need to do it! It's a sticky mess of food and dishwasher detergent. Here's a link so you can see the product:

Some of my white plastic containers were covered with little black dots that were nearly impossible to remove. I figured it's probably bits of black plastic from the other items such as handles, etc. also in the dishwasher. I now wash them separately.

Good luck,
: ) Maureen
