I was wondering if any else had this problem before. My 13m old daughter keeps getting this reocurring diaper rash. We couldn't figure out teh deal b/c we always changed her never fed her anything weird. I took her to the Dr twice. The 2nd time they fianlly concluded she had Thrush!!!! She has been on the meds for 1 1/2 weeks now. It got better then worse(with a really bad poopy)now it is almost gone again and the meds are almost gone.
Has anyone had this before?? How long does it take?? They told me it could take awhile but I'm wondering if it's not completly gone by say tomorrow should I take her to get evauleuated again? This whole thing has been crazy and I want it over. I can't stand to see her in pain
Thanks
EDIT PS: We DO change her often. Even leave her w/o a diaper for a while. We have tried diffrent diapers, wipes and omitied milk for a short period. She gets 6oz of juice(mixed with h2o still) once a day if at all.
None of these seemed to be the cause.
Thanks again
Well Thank you all for the advice. It was like the thing knew I was ready to do battle. B/C this morining when I got her up and changed her it was ALL gone. YEA :))) Finally. Maybe it will stay away LOL:) If any one out there's child ever gets a really bad diaper rash with little bumps don't heisatate to take them to the DR.
Thanks Again

I see you have gotten some really good advice. My children have never had thrush but they both have very sensitive skin thanks to me I have really sensitive skin. They would get very bad diaper rashes. I took my son to the doctor when he was younger and she told me to take antifungal cream and the regular desitin and mix it and put that on there and it worked so well that when my daughter had one I would use it and it cleared it right up. I try not to use any prescriptions. I like to use home remidies if possible. Good luck

Hi T.:
You might have tried this already, but some of the best advice I've received so far is to buy diapers the next size up a little early. For example, when my daughter was 10lbs., I put her into 12-18lb. diapers. That way, the "butt" of the diaper hangs lower, like around her knees, and keeps the wetness or poopy away from her skin. It looks a little funny, but we haven't had one diaper rash yet! I don't know if it works as they get older, but it's worth a try?? Good luck...

Maybe she is alergic to diapers. Have you thought of using cloth? Or maybe try a different diaper. All of my family (sisters/brothers) had to use cloth.
Hope this helps,

It's very common to get a yeast infection in a diaper. Try using a creme called Baza Antifungal on her every time you change her diaper. I was a skin and wound care nurse for 8 years, and we used it on almost all incontinent patients as a preventative/ healing treatment. You can get it at most medical supply stores, or at online medical suppliers. It's not the cheapest thing, but it works.
Goos Luck!

At this age my son got very bad diaper rashes, and it turned out to be a strange reaction to milk -- since I had just switched him off formula to milk, he went back on formula for another 6 months, and then to soy milk. He out grew it by 2. For ointment my Dr. has me mix 50/50 maylox and aquaforic (it is a clear gell stuff found by the lotions) -- it worked wonders on clearing it up, his was at one time to the point of bleeding, and this was the only stuff that didn't make him scream in more pain.

actually oddly enough my middle son had this same problem ad again it was a yeast infection, the doctor should be able to give you a cream to put on it and it does take forever to actually get rid of it would go away and the first day i didn't treat it it would come back so be prepared, some children are just sensitive and it's not an issue so much of them sitting for prolonged periods in wet diapers but the simple fact that they sit in wet diapers at all. it it's not gona and your medicine is take her back and ask if it could be a yeast infection and get a perscription for that. using a wet rag and not wipes can help to as well as letting her go without a diaper when you can so her bottom can get air the hardest time to keep on top of anything like this is at night so make sure you have powder or ointment on her before bed. good luck.

We had some serious diaper rash issues when my kids were little also. If the doc finds nothing wrong (like a yeast infection) then I would suggest putting a bunch of towels down in the bed when she goes to sleep and just let her be naked. Fresh airflow is the best cure. When I HAD to have a diaper on them I would put on vaseline just to create a barrier between the skin and the diaper. Good Luck.

Whoa, From what I read the Thrush can be an allergic reaction to cows milk have you tried switching to soy (formula or milk)? My daughter got really bad diaper rash when she was a baby and we used straight vitamin E on it. We would by the softgels you can get in the suppliments isle, nip them with the nail clippers and squeeze the contents on her rear end. She seemed to be relieved of the discomfort immediately and the rash would be gone within 12 hours (applying more with every diaper change). The nice part was that the vitamin E softgels costed about half as much as most diaper ointments for a big bottle.

thrush is very difficult to get rid of. just be patient. it comes back repeatedly before going away. when my little one had it, my doctor told me to take liquid malox and rub it on her bottom. it took the diaper rash right away! good luck hunny, and don't get discouraged if she is placed on another medicine. it took three different meds to get rid of thrush before we found the right one for our little one!

Sounds like you are doing everything right... Thrush is yeast . I am a NICU RN and it is not uncommon for a baby to get yeast in the diaper area, more common for a baby who has been on antibiotics though. hopefully your doc gave her some nystatin ointment.. Be sure to use excellent handwashing so it does not spread, because it can -- very fast!

Hi T.,
My daughter had thrush and this is what I learned. It is a manifestation of an overgrowth of yeast. If you don't get it under control it is likely she will have repeated ear infections and possibly urinary tract infections. The best thing to cure this is to get the good flora in her intestines to a high number. A product by Shaklee is the best you can find. You can use it even with a newborn. If you'll go to www.shaklee.net/changinglives and in the upper right hand corner put in 20639 it will bring you to this product. Let me know if you need any additional information.

My kids never had thrush but my son had a period of really bad diaper rash that would seem to just appear. And it was bad. Max would start to cry when I'd go to change his diaper.
There is a product called Triple Paste. It's about $6/7 for a small tube. It's an over the counter product but most places keep it behind the counter at the pharmacy. It works wonders.
I would also use soft paper towels and warm water instead of wipes. I hope this helps. I know how hard it is to see your little ones in pain.

The best thing to use on diaper rash is called Butt Paste and you can get it at Walgreens or Walmart. It is the best diaper rash cream in the world. It will be gone in a day. I also got baby powder with corn starch before I learned about Butt Paste and that too helped but I highly recommend getting Boudreax's Butt Paste.
My daughter did have thrush before too and it did take a while for it to go away. I can't remember fully the time but you could always call the doctor and perhaps speak with a Pharmasist or Nurse to find out how long it should take to clear up.
Good luck!

Are you sure it's thrush? My daughter kept getting a rash and it was a yeast infection around your daughters age. The foot powder Desican clears it up in a hurry. The diaper wipes can cause it or sitting in a unknown wet diaper for a long time. Change wipes or use a wash cloth to clean up. Got a few thoughts.

My youngest daughter used to get very bad diaper rash to where her bottom would bleed and almost look like it had abrasions on it and my pediatrician said to use a mixture of mylanta, A&D ointment and Desitin it sounds strange but it worked wonders as soon as I would put it on you could tell if would relieve the discomfort it can be a little messy mixing it all and trying to apply it because the mylanta is liquid but it is the antacid properties of the mylanta that really helps. Hope this helps I hate to think of little ones with a bad rash!

I KNOW YOU HAVE GOT A LOT OF GREAT ADVICE. MY DAUGHTER HAS HAD THRUSH AT BOTH ENDS HAS NEVER USED A PACI AND WAS ON SOY MILK AT THE TIME. BUT ALSO WHEN SHE HAS BAD DIAHREA SHE TENDS TO GET AN EXTREMELY BAD RASH TYPICALLY WE USE ASOMETHING CALLED PINXAV (YES IT IS PINK AND YOU DON'T WANT TO GET IT ON ANYTHING IT IS HARD TO GET OUT) IT ISUALLY WORKS QUICKLY AND I HAVE STOPPED USING DIAPER WIPES ALL-TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY JUST IRRITATE THE BOTTOM WHEN THE CHILD HAS A RASH. ONE OF THE REASONS THE DOCTOR SAID SHE BREAKS OUT SO MUCH EASIER THEN MY SON IS BECAUSE HER BM'S ARE MORE ACIDIC THAN NORMAL AND IT ISN'T ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT WE JUST MAKE SURE TO PUT PINXAV ON AS SOON AS SHE HAS A BAD BM AND NOW THE RASHES ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT A LITTLE BIT. J.

Did your doctor explain what & how kids get thrush? It's a type of yeast infection. The diaper rash part can vary on how long before it clears up. The mouth part is usually from kids sharing their pacifiers w/other kids or dropping it on the floor & putting it back in their mouths without it being cleaned off. My son had the diaper ____@____.com was bad enough they had to prescribe a Rx cream for him.

You might ask your ped if the problem could be a yeast rash. My son had that when he was about your daughters age and he said it's fairly common. I thought it was just diaper rash, but it was so bad he'd bleed a little bit when I wiped him off even when I was as gentle as possible. They give you a special cream to put on it and it cleared the rash up in no more then a week. I hope you find out what it is soon. I know how horrible it can be NOT to know why your child is in pain.

I have a son that is 16 months old. When he starts teething - or his tooth/teeth - start to come in - he usually gets a bad diaper rash one to two days then it is done. My pediatrician stated that that can be normal, just like if they got a fever, ear ache, etc.
Can you have her soak (yeah right - I know-- ha lol) in like a oatmeal bath?
I am not sure if that helps - but at least you know that it happens. :-)
Just a thought -
Hope it gets better soon!

Ugh, thrush!! My son had bad thrush when he was born, but it was in his mouth. Thrush can be VERY hard to get rid of, which we found out the hard way! It took SEVERAL weeks (a couple months, actually), and SEVERAL different doses and kinds of antifungal before it finally went away. Don't get discouraged, just keep communicating with your pediatrician. I think it's one of those things where you have to find the right combination of medicine and doses before it finally goes away! Good luck!!

Sometimes there is nothing that can be done for the diaper rash while they are on antibiotics except for some prescribed diaper cream. Is it thrush that she has and they prescribed an oral medication called nystatin for her? this is one of the more frequent medicines along with amoxicillan, omnicef, augmentin, just to name a few that causes rashes. medications causes yeast rashes and thats probably what she has. its nothing that you guys are doing wrong its just one of the side effects that medications have. as soon as she is finish with the meds the rash will disappear soon after. i am sure that it is painful for her at this point but it will be over. Hope this helps

Hi T.! We had the exact same thing happen with our daughter. My doctor ended up just having me use Monistat on her rash. However, the rash kept coming back. We actually ended up putting her in cloth diapers. I know that does not sound at all appealing...but it worked. The cloth diapers pulled the moisture away from her. On a sied note it was also nice to omit diapers from the grocery list. Good luck!!

Hello, I have much experience with diaper rashes. My daughter actually has kidney reflux and was on alot of medications that caused diaper rashes. My son can not have any juice because that causes rashes. The absolute best that I have found is to put MALOX on the rash, this takes out the acid in the rash and will relieve the pain. Then I put on top of that Boudeax's Butt Paste. This took my son's rash away in two days, but it showed signs of improvement by the next diaper change. The most important thing is to get them out of pain, and the malox really works. Goodluck to you and I hope it clears up soon.

Hi T.. Poor thing, how uncomfortable. Do you change the diapers often? Some babies need more changings than others. Does she drink any fruit juice? Juice can be very acidic for some babies. It has been my experience that making sure the baby doesn't sit or lay very long in a wet or messy diaper and using cornstarch powder(J&J Baby Cornstarch or regular cornstarch work.) with every change works. Also, treating a rash I've used Desitin, Aquaphor, or Burts Bees Diaper Rash Cream first then a light pat of cornstarch powder with each change till rash goes away. Finally if it's a stubborn rash I use one of the creams listed above with some Monistat(or equivalent) directly on rash areas with a light pat of cornstarch powder on top with each change. Usually the rash goes away within a few hours to 2 days depending on the severity of the rash. I hope this might work for you. Good Luck

My oldest had the problem, got it after antibiotics. He got oral thrush, and a yeast infection on his bottom. He had to use nystatin cream and that got rid of it quick!!!! The oral thrush took about 2 weeks to cure, used oral nystatin.....not anything you can control.......it happens!!!!
My second son got oral trhush while nursing because I had a bladder infection and was put on Amoxicillin. Yeah, that transferred to me, it hurt. We were both treated with the oral nystatin for 3 weeks before it got better. It kept getting passed from breast to mouth and back.
Good luck. Warm baths help, then air dry. Look into nystatin cream, ask for it. Our pediatrician recognized it for what it was right away the first time....maybe yours is looking too closely.

When my daughter was that age, she had recurring rashes out of nowhere that were so bad she would bleed. Because she was adopted, I even went so far as to ask the doctor to check if it was an STD, just in case, because we were stumped.
Then I noticed that when I forgot to give her the PolyVisol vitamins, she cleared up. I stopped all together and her rash was gone. I'd never heard of being allergic to vitamins and the doctor figured it could be a preservative in them. I was completely convinced when I left her with my mom who gave her the vitamins, not knowing. The next day she was red and bleeding again. We still don't know what exactly she's allergic to, but no more vitamins! Good luck!

Hi T.. I have 4 kids and never heard of Thrush being on the butt. It may be yeast/fungal, but Thrush is in the mouth. They get white patches in the mouth. For my kids I was told to get a fungal cream. Like you would get for athletes foot or Jock Itch. I usually get the generic because it works just as well as the regular. Put on the rash & rub it in a little bit, and then put diaper rash cream on the top of that. Meds can cause those kind of rashes. Let me know, girls tend to get these alot because of all the little creveses (sp?), but my son gets it quite a bit too. good luck!
