N.B.
I've always used bleach water. That usually gets any smell out.
I use the 1 gal. apple juice containers for water refills at the store. We have an apple CIDER container and can't get the smell out. I've tried a vinegar/water mixture and let it sit for a couple of days, but it is still fairly strong. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!๐

I think, if you have the choice, you should let it go and recycle the cider bottle. There comes a point where time and effort spent is not worth the reward. :-)
We also get water refills at the store sometimes (we have a reverse osmosis system but it is not working this week and our tap water is not drinkable) so I know exactly what you are talking about. However, I do have a firm rule that water jugs for water only. There are certain kinds of containers that just don't let the smell go and I would spend more (and stress more) on getting the smell out than I would just purchasing a couple of good water containers. Because of the R/O system, we rarely have to buy any more, but like this week, I ran out and purchased two new full jugs of water and then I am refilling those as I use them up. If I had to refill all the time, I would look at a Brita, R/O, PUR, or at a minimum nice glass jugs to use at the store.
Good luck!
This is the problem with plastic bottles for water. Plastic is a huge problem for the environment too. Apple juice is also acidic.
If vinegar doesn't work, you could try baking soda. You'll have to keep shaking up a baking soda/water solution because the baking soda will settle to the bottom, but try it for a few hours. Then rinse thoroughly and let the bottle sit in the sun to see if that works.
Otherwise, switch to stainless steel water containers. I'm not sure what "refills at the store" means - are you getting free water someplace? Do you work at a store? Not sure why you need gallon containers - I don't think you'll find find it in a one gallon size. But stainless doesn't absorb odors and it can go through the dishwasher.
I suspect the cider has permeated the plastic making it impossible to remove the odor. You could try a baking soda solution. Coffee grounds absorb odor too. Use dry grounds that have not been used. Put them in the bottle dry and close the lid.
