My husband's job is relocating us to ATL in 3 weeks and we have 4 days next week to find housing and childcare.

Besides the fact that I am freakin' out about moving from Chicago to Atlanta because I have no family or friends there. But I absolutely need to find a kindergarden shcool for my 5 year old and a daycare for my 17 month old within a mile of each other. Anyone have any suggestions??

What can I do next?

I can understand the no family thing. I moved here a little over a year ago and I love it butit is hard to find friends. I wish you the best ofluck. I also wish I could help yo on the childcare stuff but I haven't a clue. I lived in Roswell and just moved to Woodstock. Rightabove Marietta. If you ever need anything let me know i will try and help. My husband is from here and knows where a lot of things are. Good luck.

Hi K.,

I am moving to East Cobb (zip code 30068) in less than 2 wks. I work in Dunwoody. I too am having difficulty finding childcare for my 4 mo old. Be sure to "drop in" to any of your prospective day care facilities. I have found that some are not very secure. I have looked for daycare around my work & in East Cobb. I am not having any luck. They are either booked up for 1 or more yrs or the facility is not secure or clean. If you come across anything, I would appreciate your help. There is a website where you can look up each daycare facility to check out their reputation with the state. That address is www.decal.state.ga.us

Hi Katie,

Welcome to Georgia. I'm originally from Indiana and just moved to Marietta from Florida mid May. People around here are very nice so far. It is beautiful too.

Unfortunately I do not know enough about full time day care. I have my 4 year old enrolled in a 3 day program at First United Methodist Church per recommendation of a friend. However, I could ask some of the people I have met. We bought a new home that we love in West Cobb. I absolutely love it.

If I can help with any relo info, I will. You can also visit www.cobbk12.org to find information about kindergarten. A good realtor at Zip Realty named Tim Dougherty helped me with my home purchase. They also give a rebate at closing. I'm sure they could help you find a rental too if needed.

Good Luck and contact me if you need anything. I'm not always on the computer everyday due to still settling in. We also have visitors coming, so if I do not respond right away, I may have company that week.

My sister-in-law lives in Marietta and loves the daycare she uses. She's not in that zipcode, though. Is that a Marietta zipcode? The daycare she uses is called Kids-R-Kids, but I'll have to get the exact location because there are about 5 in Marietta, and each one is very different.

About moving to the area - it'll be hard leaving friends and family, but it really is nice here. We moved here last year when I was (9 months) pregnant with my first....that was very difficult because I had no friends or family here to help out. Since then, though, I've made quite a few friends by joining some playgroups. It seems like most of the moms are also new to the area, and they're all so nice! Everyone else here is overall pretty nice, too. It's a much more laid back place than Chicago.

Once you get settled in, take a look at the playgroups. One can be found on www.meetup.com (do a search for SAHM groups, and then your city). Another one is www.alpharettaplaygroup.com, which is moms from the northern GA area.

Good luck with your move. If you'll be in the area for a while, I'd suggest renting for a year so you can determine where you'd really like to live.
