As a personal trainer as well as a person who hates getting a sore bottom, I recommend the recumbent.
I'm looking into maybe purchasing an exercise bike. However, I'm not sure which type would give me the best workout, the recumbent or an upright? I like the seat with the recumbent bike because it looks more comfortable than the bike seat on the upright but not sure if it would provide the same benefit. I'm looking at a bike because of the space availability that I have and for also my husband to be able to use. He has really bad knees so I figured a bike would be better for him than a treadmill. What are ya'lls thoughts between the two types? I'm rather naive on this kind of stuff so if anyone can help me figure this out I would appreciate it.
Thank you all so much! I am truely naive when it comes to this stuff. I am so glad I asked. I was thinking that the upright bike would give me more of a workout but I did think that the recumbent one would be easier on the knees. I don't like the seat on the uprights. They are sooo uncomfortable but if it gave me a better workout I was willing to overlook that. I will definitely try them both out first but I am now leaning more towards the recumbent. Thank you all again!

We have both. I bought a recumbent years ago and the nmy husband wanted the upright due to back issues so we got that as well. he had trouble getting up from so low to the floor. I prefer mine. I feel like I get a better workout. Try them both. There is not much difference in the way they each work for you--I think recumbent is supposed to be a bit better but not so much it matters. But, the big difference is WILL YOU USE IT? Try them both out and see if you have a preference.
I have a recumbent bike and absolutely love it. It's easier on my back (has a back rest) and my knees. If your husband has bad knees, the recumbent is the way to go. That's what my doctor told me, and my mom who has also had knee replacement surgery. Plus, you're right, the seat is wider.
I LOVE our recumbent bike. I can ride for a long time and not even notice I've gone 30-40 minutes. I can put my laptop on my son's little table and check email, FB and Mamapedia!
I've used both at the gym and for whatever reason, notice better results with the recumbent bike. It's more challenging for my legs. I don't know if there's a real reason for that, but it's noticeable to me.
If your husband has bad knees get the recumbent. I have bad knees and go forever on the recumbent but not on our upright.
