Recommendations on Plasticware with Lids That Don't Shrink in Dishwasher

Updated on October 30, 2008

I'm sick of my plasticware, the missing lids and the ones that shrunk in the dishwasher and no longer fit. I just had my lunch (soup) spill all over my car, looks like someone threw up in there. Anyone have some tupperware, whatever, that they really like and is not another source of minor irritation in your life? I do not want to wash by hand.

What can I do next?

Lock & Lock's are the best ever! You can get them on QVC & some other places; they don't stain, the lids seal on tight & they can be washed over & over again in the dishwasher without any issues. Guaranteed... no more spills! Happy Shopping!

J.,
I think the brans is called STERLTIE. I will have to go downstairs and look and email back if I am wrong. My husband is notorius for keeping the plastic in the microwave toolong at work and we were getting burn spots on the plastic. This stuff does not burn or stain and it washes great in our diswasher.

I'm with the consensus, Lock & Lock or Rubermaid! I have both! Do not purchase Gladware b/c you can't get the darn lids off without ripping them (and spilling food). Ziploc is ok too, but go with Rubbermaid first. There, that's my 2 cents!! Good luck!

Set your dishwasher to cool dry. It'll save you money on plasticware and save you money on your electric bill.

You're not gonna believe this, but I actually get the good ol' Rubbermaid TakeAlongs from Wal Mart or wherever and they go through the dishwasher over and over and over and they're still goin' strong!

Sorry 'bout the soup attack in your car!

My mother-in-law got me addicted to "Lock & Lock". They are clear plastic bottoms and lids with a blue seal built into the lid. And the lids have these flaps that snap over the bottom, so its a tight fit. They sell them at Walmart, Target and even some grocery stores. They are wonderful! And I have yet to have any of them leak. Oh, and they are microwave/dishwasher/freezer safe!!!

Some of the best temporary containers we have used are from Chinese take out. They seal up pretty well and I put them in the dishwasher. Plus, we're not just tossing them out!

I have used the Rubbermaid Takealong bowls with screw on lids. While they are made for liquids, I have found them to leak when turned upside down or on their side.

I was going to recommend a thermos but I suspect they are hand wash only and I am all for the dishwasher too!

As for regular plasticware, I have used Ziploc containers and the 'less disposable' Rubbermaid (red lids). Neither of those shrink in the dishwasher but they both seem to get white spots and I am not talking about water spots. With all of the plastic scare I am thinking about getting rid of them all and starting over.

rubbermaid. I have some that is new as well as older ones form my m-il. She used them in the freezer and dish washer.
They are still in great condition. I do not microwave in any plastic i use glass. for soup the thermos would be the best as the lid screw on. I have tupperware also but the rubbermaid is just as good. The ruubermaid is alot less and is made in the us. Not sure were tupperware is made and i knew that rubber maid was made here so that is why I bought it and I like it.

Tupperware is the best, though a little pricey. It can go in the dishwasher on top and bottom racks for the most part. I have had some for YEARS and it just keeps on going. My mom even gave me some of hers that she no longer uses and it is really old. Worth the investment.

I like the Stack and Spin. I've never had any trouble with shrinking lids or leakage. And it takes up so little space.

One thing I want to mention is that there has been a lot of talk lately about how putting plastic in the dishwasher or microwave causes chemicals from the plastic to leak into food, potentially causing harm over a long period of time. Same thing goes for plastic that is peeling or chipping. Unfortunately, I don't know an easy answer to not using plastic. It is so versatile. I love my plastic containers and I loathe washing dishes by hand. I just want to provide this information in case you haven't seen the news reports and so you can decide if this is an issue for you.

This is quite easy to fix. Go to QVC.com and search for Lock and Lock. They are amazing. I have them in many sizes. My kids love them for toys since they were designed to be opened by people with limited hand strength. Good Luck.

Plus I forgot to mention the price. Do not be fooled. They are amazing and very cheap!

I love the ziplock brand, with the lids that turn. They come in small and large. Great for soup! As for the flat ones. I use rubbermaide from walmart.

Hi J.....I use a set that I received recently as a gift from JCPenny. I just checked the lid and it's called Lock & Lock. All four sides of the lid actually locks onto the container. I have put them in the dishwasher and they still seem to work fine.

I've used Tupperware for years now and find them well worth the investment. They have various styles. I have an older version of the Heat-n-serve line which don't stain or shrink. I also have containers from my Mom which are about 30 yrs old! I do have some of the Lock & Lock that others have talked about and haven't had a problem with them so far either. These stack really well.
