Reciting Movies

My 3 year old is only allowed to watch one DVD a day (and really no TV), but he's starting to recite and act out what the characters are doing on the DVDs he watches. He doesn't just sit and enjoy them. He has to act out everything. We have a large variety of DVDs, so it's not like he's watching the same one over and over, and like I said, we limit the amount he watches. Is this behavior normal? Or should we cut back even more on the watching?
Thank you in advance for your advise!!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much!! I feel better, and I'll definitely try the PBS shows or try to get more education DVDs instead of Disney all the time. Thanks again. : 0)

Completely normal, and good, too! He's not just sitting there like a zombie staring at the tv. He's actually interacting and understanding what thery're doing. He's also pretending to be/do something else, which is good for creative play. I like the interactive shows that gets kids moving and involved rather than the ones just for entertainment, especially for such a young child.

I agree with the last poster about PBS kids! They have such wonderful, interactive, educational shows!! My son only gets to watch a show a day, and I try to vary which one that is. You can go to www.pbskids.org and check out what shows they have, and see which one you like (my 2 year old loves Word World, where they talk about letters and "building words", and of course, "Sesame Street"!). If you have a set time of day for tv time, then just record the show (dvr's are great for this!) and have him watch it when you want him to.

I agree that is very normal. My kids don't really do that with DVD's, but the do recite books all the time. I think most kids this age do the same.

TOTALLY normal!! This is actually a good sign for you. He is creative, engaging in character behaviors, role playing etc. This is a good indicator of maturity, when they realize that these characters arent just images on the screen. As long as you are choosing appropriate movies, which I am sure you are, then no need to worry. The only one we had trouble with is Kung Fu Panda, but even then, it was a great chance to teach my 3 year old when that type of play was appropriate and when it was not. Have fun..it is a fun time when they really get their imagination going!! ~A.~

Soooo normal. When my daughter was about that age, she was acting out some of the more "violent" parts of Lilo and Stitch, The Incredibles, and a few other movies. We "lost" those particular movies until just recently because we didn't want her to continue with that behavior. It stopped almost immediately.

My only advise would be to consider letting him watch PBS kids. The shows are educational in a variety of ways. They provide lessons not only academically but also in dealing with friendships, sharing, emotions, etc. These are things you can discuss with your child and even encourage him to act out.
