Quitting Sugar?

Anybody have any suggestions on how to kick the sugar habit? For over a year now I've been going back and forth with trying to eliminate sugar from my diet. I can be good for 4 or 5 days, then I just binge on sweets.

I know I've heard to eliminate one habit you must substitute with a new habit. I am going to add running or yoga to my daily routine.

In the meantime I would like some suggestions. I would like to lose 10-15lbs by October. I'm standing up in a friends wedding and am using that as my motivation.

Thanks
F.

hi F.,

quitting sugar...hard thing to do. taking chromium picolinate every day will help curb the craving. also, when you crave sugar, normally your body is needing protein. try having a little protein when you crave it...cheese and crackers, handful of nuts, etc. if you're doing this to lose weight, you need to be more concerned about glycemic index...that is how eating sugar sends your glucose up in your body very fast and it is stored as fat, and gives you that classic "sugar high". if you are going to lose weight, make sure that every time you have something with sugar like fruit or carbs, you have protein at the same time. an apple? put peanut butter on it..etc. small meals throughout the day about 200 calories each, each with protein. protein helps the sugar get absorbed much more slowly so your body can utilize it more effectively. also, a lot a lot of veggies and fiber and water.

let me know if you need any more suggestions. good luck!

Hi F.,

This is C.. We e-mailed each other a few times a couple monts ago. We had scheduled a playdate at the indoor castle and unfortunately, I had to cancel.

With that said, I am trying to do the same thing, quit sugar. I was wondering what other modifications you might be doing? 2 years ago I went on the Atkins diet and lost about 45 pounds. Then I went and got pregnant-he he :) So now I need to restart. I was going to tell you that the ability to eat more fats on Atkins nearly eliminated my desire for sweets. It is also said that it takes 3 weeks to create a (good) habit. When a craving did strike I would eat one of the Atkins bars, which are very (artifically) sweet. They also fill you up so it is fairly difficult to binge on them. Will you be taking a yoga class? Where? Where are you in Lake Zurich?

I would like to make another play date with you and your kids. Wiley, now 4, isout of school next week. Jackie, now 1, is most always with me.

Hope to hear from you.

Okay the best way i found was not the elimante the sweets but elimante the sweets made from processed sugar. I use Sugar in the Raw to sweeten everything! I also eat more fruit and drink more water. When you are craving sugar your body is actaully asking for more water. Between being better aware of my thirst and using natural un processed sugar I have lost over 15 lbs and it has stayed off!!! A good source of recepies because I have tummy issues is helpforibs.org this site has an index of more healthy and fat free or reduced recepies that don't ame me feel as if I am straving for sweets. Hope this helps!

Hi F.

Have you seen the website www.flylady.com? I used the body clutter system...it has been working well for me. This is not specific to kicking sugar but does help you figure out why you keep going back to impulse eating.

Kind Regards

hi.. I know.. it is hard isn't it..?? I'm trying to lose weight too..
from everything that I read.. it is important to keep your blood sugar level on a consistent level.. so that means eating more whole grains.. things that have more fiber.. and drinking lots of water to fill you up..also having some protein with your meals.. instead of all carbs.. proteins fill you up and keep your sugar level more consistent too..
the water also helps metabolize fat...

they say the "white stuff" (which we all love.. ) like white pasta, white bread.. white rice..potatoes.. and also refined sugars.. such as candy bars..regular pop.. and candy..all cause a spike in your blood sugar..and then a big drop... and then you crave it even more..and you feel tired and sluggish.. there are more technical/medical terms for all of this.. but.. you know what I mean..

and I read even diet drinks.. they are a lot sweeter than regular sugar..the splenda artificial sweetner... they try and trick the brain.. but everything I read says it makes you crave sugar even more.. better to drink water if at all possible while you get off the sugar band wagon..I do enjoy diet drinks myself.. if you are going to have a sweet..try and limit it to as small of a portion as possible.. its hard to give it up cold turkey and you realy don't have to.. eat it with a meal to lessen the bad effects...also.. just get moving.. I know.. I need to lose a good 10 pounds and have been kicking up my walking and joined a yoga class.. where do you take yoga? I wish us BOTH good luck.. my weakness is at night.. when I get the munchies.. UGH!
