my husband took mine apart.. under the spinney thing is a belt.. you need a new belt.. it broke.. my husband called a parts store ordered a new belt.. put it in.. and it worked even better than before. a repair guy will charge you crazy.. it cost us 7 dollars to get the belt and 4 dollars shipping.. worth it..and not hard to change.. ask a handy neighbor for help... repair guys will charge you like 60 or 70 to just walk in...

What did you try to launder? This happened to me when I tried to wash a very heavy mattress cover. It appears that because of the heavy item which soaked up a lot of water the machine was out of balance and wouldn't spin. I rearranged the item inside the drum and it worked again.

Just had that problem...unfortunatly we didn't realize how easy it would have been to fix and got anew one. Then I saw the appliance recyclers list it on craigslist as just needing a belt replaced! lol

It kind of depends. I had a GE that did something like that and it was more than a belt and was going to cost near what I paid new for it just a year and a half before. I had a kenmore before the GE. It did that and it was only a belt. I loved my old kenmore.

You may just need the belt replaced.. It is worth it to call a repair person to come and check it out.. Get the serial number and the brand off of the back of the machine and call an appliance repair company..

Or if you or your husband is handy, you may be able to repair it yourselves..

It's likely to only need a part. How old is your machine? Find a good repairman and keep this one out of the landfill a little while longer.

Good luck. D.

If it won't spin or drain then you probably need a new lid switch. My dh is not handy at all and he was able to replace ours. Google replace washer lid switch and you'll find descriptions of how to diagnose and repair it. The part was less than $40 for us, much cheaper than a new washer!
