Questions Regarding Taking Dogs to Korea

I can't speak for dogs in on-post housing but we have a dog in an off-post apartment & have friends with a dog in a different complex as well. Where in Korea will you be?

Having pets in housing areas depend on which installation (and which housing area within that installation) you are assigned to. If you are assigned to Seoul (Yongsan Army Garrison), you are allowed to have pets in all housing areas except Burke Towers. If you live off post in downtown Seoul, having pets depends on the rules established by your landlord.

Do you know what Garrison you will be stationed at? I am at Yongsan, in Seoul and there are alot of dogs in housing. The only housing area that does not allow pets is Burke Towers (mainly because it is apartment style and newer). Not sure about off post housing, but I am sure there is something that will allow pets. Good Luck.

It depends on where you move. I know that most of the housing at Yongsan does not allow pets. As to which housing you will be bale to get here depends on your DH rank and family size.
E1-E8 are normally all in Hanam village, all apartment buildings and no pets.
W11-W3, O1-3) are in Hanam too, no pets.
Some E8, E9, W4, W5 and O4 live on south post housing, some of them live in Burke towers(from what I know only officers) which is apartments and no pets, then the rest of housing is open to pets.
Some housing is open to any rank as long as your family is big enough but it doesn't sound like yours is(6 kids or more) and they are housing that can have pets.

As long as it doesn't say High or Low rise you can have your dog in the housing.

I live in Korea and many people have brought their pets with them. It depends on where you are going and your rank. Pets are allowed on Yongsan but it's mainly officers and E-9's, no lower ranking E's unless they live in barracks. Anyway, I live in Hannam which is part of Yongsan Housing but located about 2 miles away and NO pets are allowed here because we live in apartments and don't have our own yards. They used to allow pets but people never took responsiblity for their pets and let them poop and pee in elevators. Anyway, some apartments on the econom accept pets, it just depends. So what you might want to do is keep your pet with a friend or family and then send for it later when you can get a place that accepts pets.

There are some places that you can bring your pets. We are currently living in Daegu on Camp George. I know you are allowed pets in the Daegu area on Camp Walker as well. I had heard that you are not allowed pets in Seoul if you live in Hannam Village.

I know of several people that have brought their pets, you just have to find out where you will be.

I am a DoD civilian assigned to Osan Air Base in Korea. We brought our dog, a pit bull that thinks he is a poodle...he is very docile & weighs about 60 pounds. We live off base, about 10 minutes from the base in a house. There are lots of houses in this area (Pyongtaek City) with yards or at least pieces of grass. Most of the landlords will rent to you with dog and all and even put up a fence for your dog if you ask. They don't seem to mind if you keep your dog inside. Just make sure you have all shots up to date....must be at least 30 days....double check with immigration to find out what the rules are for bringing your dog with you...specifically what shots are required and the time line they need to get the shots before arriving to Korea. Immigration was going to keep our dog in quarantine for 2 weeks because it had not yet been 30 days since he had his shots....when the immigration officials realized we were coming from Hawaii, they allowed us to take our dog with us since Hawaii is a rabies-free state. Otherwise, he would have stayed in quarantine for 2 weeks and we would of have to pay out pocket (no reimbursement) for his stay in quarantine. Most all of our neighbors have dogs, some more than 1 dog...and we all watch each other dogs when we are gone for any length of time. The other thing to consider is the time of year you will be traveling...if too hot or too cold, the airlines do not want to take your pet as cargo. We sedated our dog and it worked out okay.
The other thing to consider is contacting the kennel at the post/base you will be PCSing to way in advance to make reservations for your dog. If you will be staying at billeting or in a hotel, most hotels do not allow pets. You will need to secure a place (kennel) to keep your dog while you are house hunting. If you do your homework and research what the rules are with immigration, I don't think you will have difficulty finding a place off base/post that will rent to you with a dog. I don't know what the rules are for living on post. Where will you be PCSing to? Wish you all the best.

Hi, where are you moving to? At USAG Humphreys dogs are allowed in quarters and I know many families have them. Also, lots of families that live off post have pets too. I only know about Humphreys. It's probably different post to post!

PS We have loved living here for the last almost 3 years!

We just got to Korea (Yongsan ) and brought our 65 lbs boxer. We are off-post in a highrise and pets are allowed. In Seoul, single family houses are rare. They have villas (apartment buildings with 5 stories or less) and some of those have ground floor units with small yards or small garden areas around the building. A lot of the housing is highrise apartment buildings, some of which allow dogs and some of which do not. I think your best course of action is to see what your housing options are based on your husband's rank, job and location.

When you arrive, you will be staying at Dragon Hill Lodge until you find housing or move to another place in Korea. There is a Pet Care Center on Yongsan that you can board your dog at until you move into your housing. The cost ranges from $15 to $25 dollars a day depending on the size of your dog ($20 for you I think). As long as you have the proper paperwork (International Health Certificate, Rabies Certificate, microchip) they won't quarantine your dog.
