My husband and I are headed to Cancun this weekend. My parents are staying in our house with our son. I have some questions for those who have traveled internationally WITHOUT your children...
Will my cell phone work while in mexico? Is that the cheapest way to call home or is getting a prepaid calling card cheaper? Or using the resort?
Do I need to write out a letter and get it notorized or anything so my parents can authorize care for our son while we're gone? I plan to leave them our insurance card and a massive list of numbers, just not sure what I need to do to authorize them to consent to care.
Should I try to talk to our 3 year old every day, every other day, or not at all? We'll be gone Saturday-Tuesday. We'll be home in time to pick him up at school on Tuesday.
Anything else I should be thinking of?
Thanks for all the tips! The will is updated, the medical release form is notorized, I verified MY cell phone won't work but my husband's will, so I think we're good to go! I think my son is as excited about spending the whole weekend with grandma/grandpa as we are about getting away!

More than likely your cell service WILL NOT work in Cancun. We travel to Mexico often-use Sprint and AT&T and our service does not ever work. We utilize the telephone in our room at the resort to keep in touch.
It is adviseable to give a letter, with insurance/medical card(s) to your parents authorizing them to consent to medical treatment for your children-with full names, birthdates and social security numbers, in the event of an emergency for the duration of your trip.
Have fun :)
When you get there buy a calling card at the airport that works with the payphones in Mexico (TelCell card). Make sure you ask for the one for payphones, not for cell phones. You can call from any mall, corner, even hotels that have payphones, there are lots of them.
You will need to dial 001-972(214)and the rest of the number and it will work.
Have fun and don't call too much.Maybe once or twice for peace of mind.
Sounds morbid, but make sure your will is current, just in case. A limited medical power of attorney would be useful too.
Good for you for making time for your marriage. That will be a blast. Your cell phone most likely works in Cancun. I would just use it. You do need to leave a note saying your parents can seek medical care and make medical decisions while you are away, give dates, specific names of parents/child, etc. I think it would be best just to call your parents a few times and check on your son. If you talk to him on the phone, he may want to call you more, and think about you more. He will be just fine. Tell him you will be home in 3 days with a special gift for him and leave it at that. I know others will have other opinions, but that is mine. Have a blast.
E.,
Your cell phone won't work in Cancun and it is very expensive to call home from the Hotel. You can get a phone card but why not just relax and enjoy your vacation. You have left your child with his grandparents and he will be fine I promise. Enjoy your husband this is the best gift you can give your child.
You can have it notorized but the hospital will take it no matter what.
